SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES

Adjutant), Brambletye and Gamecock hare been scratched for their engagements. at the Canterbury Jockey' Club’s summer meeting.

The Yaldhurst team was divided at the conclusion of the Wellington* Racing Club’s meeting, R. D. O’Donnell went on with Wishful, Koesian and Bon d’Or, to fulfil engagements at the Taranaki and Egmont meetings, while Almoner and Cyrisian returned, home, and they will probably be racing at Riccarton next Saturday. R. Reay left on Saturday for Dunedin with Tamarisk, to take part in the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting, which commences next Thursday. Tamarisk has been working really well on the New Brighton track, and has only to reproduce his training form to be almost a certain winner. He, however, seldom does his best in races and must be accounted very unreliable-

The three-year-old Sisyphus, by Treadmill—Delusive, was gelded last week. He will probably undergo another operation shortly, after which lie will be given a good spell. Biplane may make bis first New Zealand appearance this season a,t the Wanganui meeting next month, his engagements including the Jackson Stakes and the Wanganui Guineas. It is unfortunate that- Hymestra will not be on hand for the Jackson Stakes, but the presence of Estlnnd should insure a fine contest in the Guineas, as Mr T. H.. Lowry’s colt is capable of a. smart, performance over a mile. A northern writer mentions a rumour, to the effect that a stable near Wellington, which shelters some good horses, is likely to change its director before long.

Though Nobleman is engaged in tho Dunedin Cup, it is considered unlikely that he will make the trip south. His owner is understood to have designs on the Wanganui Cup, and with an interval of only a. week between the two events, the Sir Laddo gelding would not have much time to get over the trip from Wingatui. Backers had a bad time at the Takapuna Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday. The only favourite to win was Ditto, who captured the Hauraki Hack Hurdle Handicap, while Tenacious earned a second dividend in tho Orewa Hurdle Handicap. Several of the winners during the day were neglected on the totalisator.

Silver Link, who won the Calliope Handicap at the Takapuna meeting on Saturday, is a two-year-old colt by Achilles —Secret Link, by Devonian — Chains! itch, by Chainshot—- Sylph, by Javelin—Maid of the Mountain, by Traducer. frpm Myrtle, a daughter of Sharkic. Silver Link finished third in a Maiden Hack Race at tho Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting on Boxing Day. and lie has the reputation of being a smart galloper. He is trained at Plymouth bv M. Mantle, his owner being Mr A. Alexander, in whose colours Bisogne was so successful last season. Glenopal, one of the outsiders of the field, created a surprise in the Takapuna. Cup on Saturday, by loading from end to end- It was bis first, win this season, the only previous occasion on which he got into the money being early in November, when he was third to Chortle and Sir Ralph in the Avondale Oup. He is a six-vear-old gelding, who came 10 hand very slowly, as it was not until last season that he showed anything like decent form, but Mr R. Hannon, the well-known Waikato owner-trainer,' has been well rewarded now for his patience. Opal, the dam of Glenopal, does not figure in the Stud Book, but his sire, Glengowrie. comes from a s’ucecessful Auckland family, being a brother to Lass o Cowrie. Salute and King Soult, by Soult—Lady Musket, by Blairgowrie— Muskerina, a descendant of Yatterma. Mr Edward Griffen, of Allenton, Ashburton, who died at Reefton Hospital on Saturday last, was a well-known Ashburton sportsman and horseman. Some twelve months ago he was operated on at the Reefton Hospital for appendicitis and later returned home. He went l ack to the Coast in December last to : t.tendthe races and was again taken ill, and a second operation became necessary, from which he did not recover. At different times he acted as trainer for well-known horse owners, including Mr J. Grigg, Mr J, R- Hart, Mr A. Dale and Mr Hugo Friedlandw. He uas fiftv-two years of age and leaves a widow and family. His remains were interred in the Ashburton Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon.
