AN UNBROKEN FRONT
MR MASSEY IN GOOD HEART
“NO PEACE WITH KAISER AND ASSASSINS.”
DECISIVE BATTLE MAY BE
NEAR
[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, January 26
Asked last night for an expression of opinion with regard to recent cablegrams as to the action of certain pacifists at Home and as to the prospects of a big German offensive on the western front, Mr Massey said:—
“ Apparently there are certain sections of the British people who are willing to forget the outrages of which British citizens and the Allies have been the victims during the Inst three and a half years, and who are desirous of finding excuses to make peace with our innverful and unscrupulous foe, who ever since the outbreak of the war, by the foulest and most brutal methods, has left nothing undono which would tend to the destruction of the British Empire. The British spirit, however, is not yet crushed, and the strongest and best equipped army that Britain ever put in the field still presents an unbroken front to the enemy. Whatever happens, it is for us, their fellowcitizens for whom they are fighting, to support them loyally and wholeheartedly, as they deserve to be supported. “There are many millions of British citizens to-dnv, and along with them our brave soldiers and heroic sailors, who would as soon think of making peace with a family of tigers as with the Kaiser and his assassins, and who expect any conditions agreed upon to be adhered to.
“Judging by present appearances, there will be a tremendous battle on the western front within the next few months—a battle which may decide the war. But, remembering the battles, sieges and fortunes, in which Sir Douglas Haig and his men have all played their part during the war. I look with confidence to the next clash of arms. T am convinced that in Sir Douglas Haig, Admiral Bp-tty and Sir ’William Robertson we have three great captains, worthy of the men whom they lead, and the race to which they belong. These leaders are equal to the best Britain has erer produced, and are capable of defending Britain’s honour in tbe most serious crisis we have ever been called upon to face. “ With the help of Divine Providence, Who in a just cause helps those who help themselves, we shall get through successfully, and when it is all over the 'Bed. White and Blue ’ will still float triuroohant over a strong, free and united Empire.” t
