OBITUARY.
R. F. CURTIS. Mr R F. Curtis, who for thirty years had been a well-known auctioneer in the Ashburton county., died at Christchurch yesterday morning, after a short illness. Mr Curtis, who was forty-eight years of age, Btarted his business career as a youth with the late Mr David Thomas, and when quite a boy became auctioneer. When the business was purchased by the National Mortgage and Agency Company m 1908. he continued in the same capacity withe the new firm, and held the position until quite recently. In his younger days Mr Curtis was a keen sportsman. He was a splendid athlete and was a champion amateur cyclist. He established the present record between Methveu and Ashburton. He was also a keen polo player. For many years he was clerk of the course for the Ashburton Racing and Trotting Clubs relinquishing the position about two years ago. He was a member of the -committee and steward of the Trotting Club, a director of the Ashburton Industrial Building Society, and a president of the A«hburton Club for many years- He leaves a family of two sons, his wife having died a few years ago. His father, Mr A. Curtis, died recently.
