PERSONAL NOTES. A recent casualty list gave the name of Francis Hames Sullivan, lanee-cor-Soral, Engineers, killed in action on ovember 26, his next of kin being stated as John Sullivan, Methven, brother. Mr Sullivan, Mount Algidus, Rakaia Gorge, has written stating that the deceased soldier was his son, Franois James Sullivan. Mr E- J. Seymour, of 63, Thackeray Street, Waltham, has received a message from the Minister of Defence that his youngest son, Lance-Corporal 0. A. Seymour, who was in his twentieth year, died of wounds on Decemebr 3. He was wounded in October, and returned to the trenches, there receiving his mortal wounds. He enlisted with the Eleventh Reinforcements. Previously he was well known in City and Suburban cricket, having played for the Linwood Wanderers. Private Walter A. Somerville, killed in action in France on November 26, was twenty-four years of age and left with the Sixteenth Reinforcements. Prior to enlisting he was employed on a sheep station. His oldest brother was killed in action on June 7. Two other brothers are on active service, one of whom was wounded and is being invalided home. He was the second eldest son of Mr and Mrs Somerville, Irvine Street, Lower Riccarton.

Mrs E. Clayton, Clifton, Sumner, has received advice that her son, Sroopor. W. H. Clayton, of the Sixth enforcements, was killed in action in Palestine 1 on November 5. Trooper Clavton, who was well known in Christchurch. was educated at the Christchnrch Boys' High School, where he was for nine years. At the time of bis enlistment Trooper Clayton was farming on Banks Peninsula A younger brother enlisted in the Fourth Reinforcements, and has now been on active service in Gallipoli and France for about three years.

Mr Robert Smithors, Tinwald, has received word that his son, Private Fred Smithers, of the Twenty-sixth Reinforcements, was killed in action hi Franco on October 12, 1917. prior, to

leaving for camp, Private Smithers wa,j working iu the Spiingburn distriot. Mrs Haxell, of 510, Hereford Street. Linwood, has lately received news of her husband, Gunner A- E. Haxell. The first cable stated that he was slightly wounded in the elbow, the second that he had rejoined his unit in France after a few days in hospital. Somo weeks later a third cable was received stating that ho was in Brockenhurst. Hospital with myalgia, and a few days ago a fourth cable mentioned that he had been removed to the disch' '•<;o depot, Torquay. Gunner Haxell left New Zealand with the Ninth Reinforcements, Artillery, and until lately had good health and served all his-time in the firing line in France. Gunner Haxell's eldest son. Gunner H. Haxell, ivho left with the Fifth Reinforcements, has been near his father most of the time in Franco. Mr J. H. Keetley, of 49, Harewood Road, Papanui, has received from the Minister of Dcfonce a telegram stating that his son, Private G. S. Keetley, who has been fighting in Palestine, was dangerously ill on December 12 at 43rd Stationary Hospital with malignant malaria.

Word has been received by Mrs J. Harris, Woodbury, Geraldine, that her brother, Private Joseph Bailey, is being invalided home. Privato Bailey, who was educated at the Port Chalmers School, enlisted with the Twelfth Reinforcements at Gimmerburn, Otago. He was wounded in August, having an arm and a leg broken.
