PIGEON FLYING.
CANTERBURY CLUB. The Canterbury Flying Club flew its seoond Wellington race recently, 112 birds owned by twenty-one competitors being liberated at 9.30. A strong eouth-west wind prevailed over most of the course, consequently the velocity was slow, the winning bird, the property of J. W. Blanchard, taking nearly, eight hours to do the journey of 198 miles 293 yards. The following competitors finished in. the order gi ven: :— j. W. Blanchard 774yds a minute, F. Wilson 774yds, S. Smith 773yds, B. J. Finnegan 772yds, H. Browning 772yds, F. Kibblewhito 758yds, E. Fuchs 766yds, A. Gerard 754yds, H. Gates 751yds, J. Shipton 747yds, C. Shaw 737yds, Woodhouse Bros. 733yds, F. ICingsford 731yds, G. Anderson 722yds, HHill 718yds, W. Terry 716yds, Barter Bros. 714yds, C. Kirkley 689yds, D. Dore 671yds. Tho club also flew a race open to birds bred in 1916. The birds were liberated singly at intervals of ten minutes, and with iia weather improving were able to record an excellent velocity per minnte. Eleven birds, owned by eleven competitors, competed, the winning bird, the property of Woodhouse Bros., flying 196 miles 187 yards in 0 hours Bmin 34sec, a speed per minute of 936yds. The competitors were placed as follows: —Woodhouse Bros. 936yds, F. Wilson 921vds, C. Shaw 889yds, A. Gerard 870yds, D. Dore 867yds, W. Terry 811yds, J. Shipton 804yds, B. .T, Finnigan 600yds, H. Browning 686yds. Several competitors failed to time in. The clnb desires to thank Mr J. L. Le Guys for liberating the birds.
