THE NAVAL WAR.
BRITISH VESSEL SUNK. HUNS SHELL ESCAPEES. A. and N.Z. Cable Association and Renter. LONDON, October 17. The captain and forty-nine members of the crew of a British steamer, who bavie landed, report that the vessel was attacked by two submarines and sunk without warning. The submarines shelled the crew after entering the boats, killing two and wounding six.
GERMANY'S BLOCKADE. BRITISH LOSSES. A. and N.Z. Cable Association and Reutei. (Revived October 18, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, October 17. The Admiralty has issued the following return in connection with the submarine blockade for the week ending October 14:— Arrival* , • •' 2124 Sailings .... 2094 SinkingsOver 1600 tons ... 12 Under 1600 tons . . 6 Unsuccessfully attacked . 5 The figures for tho previous week were: Arrivals • • • • 2519 Sailings .... 2632 SinkingsOver 1600 tons ... 14 Under 1600 tons . . 2 Unsuccessfully attacked . 3 Tho Italian arrivals during tho week ended October 14 numbered 315 and the sailings 328. Four steamers under 1500 tons were snnk, and two vossels were unsuccessfully attacked. The following return shows the amount of shipping in each week since February 18, the vessels over 100 tons that were sunk and tho number of vessels that were unsuccessfully attacked, fishing boats being disregarded:—
NORWEGIAN BOATS SUNK. (Received October 18, 7.45 p.m.) CHRISTTANIA, October 17. The Themis, Norway's largest steamer, was torpedoed in tho Mediterranean and the sailer Bethel was sunk in th© North Sea. Both crows aro missing. AN ACT OF REVENGE. SINKING OF ITALIAN STEAMER. ATHENS, October 17. It is . universally believed here that the submarining of the Italian mail steamer Citta di Bari, in which 200 Greeks pipshod, including the Consular officials, who were returning fiom Turkey via Switzerland, was ordered by Constantino, ias an act of revenge for his dethroning.
