NEWS AND NOTES. The staff of the Canterbury Jockey Club will be very busy to-day, when further payments are due for the New Zealand Cup, acceptances for the Stewards' Handicap, first forfeits for the Welcome Stakrs, Derby and Oaks and nominations for minor events at the November meeting. The weather was fine while training operations were in progress at Riccarton yesterday. The inside of the trial grass track provided much faster going than the plough. A light nor'wtst breeze was in evidence early and it increased appreciably after breakfast, wlrn the conditions were very favourable for making time. The two-year-olds, Lionskin (Kilbronev—Counterfeit) and Heathfrcote (Boniform—Heatherbrae) opened proceedings by sprinting two furlongs up the back in 25 4-sseo. Comely, looking well after her racing in th* south, did a steady circuit, sprinting down the straight. Margerine jumped off at the mile post from a stand and covered a milo in lmin 44 l-ssec, a very attractive performance. Wrestler was worked on the plough, sprinting half a mil 0 in 49 4-ssec. Snub and Wardancer were associated over a mil" and a quarter on the p'nngh. Tli"- lr 6 pt most of the way, finishing* up their task in 2min 13 3-ssoc, a useful effort. Thestius and Battle Eve rattled over fivr furlongs, on the plough in lmin B'2-sseo, both going freely. Charley ran five furlongs on the grass in lmin 5 3-sseo, finishing in front of Post Haste, who joined in at the halfmile post. Gamecock did a steady circuit, brushing home over the last half mile. Kimbolton and Don Francisco occupird lmin 37 2-ssec over seven furlongs and the latter subsequently accompanied Sleight of Hand in a useful working gallop over a mils. Sis-nmus, assisted by Good Hope over the last part, ran a mile in lmin 44 2-ssec, finishing up his task fairly well. Disdainful ruled off seven furlongs in lmin 32seo, going very strongly all the way.

Multifnal was under a pull oyer half a mile. Bjornebors covering the samf distnnce on the plough comfortably in 51 3-ssec. * Red Pool showed to more advantage than Love Token while running five furlongs in Iroin 3 4-ssfc, It was the best effort Red Pool has yet been responsible for. Bomb easily defeated Majestikoff after sorinting half a mile in 49 3-osec. Majestikoff has not come on as was expected. Donnata registered a brilliant halfmile, getting through her task in 47 3-5 sec. She is very speedy, but does not stay. Argento, Winter Cherry, Hands Off, Marc Anthony and Euripos were among the horses restricted to easy pace work. Gazique, who arrived the previous day, was on the track, but did not gallop. He looks in good order; F. Holmes had his two three-year-olds in the jumping ring, where they were given some sohooling over the hurdles. After breakfast Briar Patch and Ascalaphus sprinted half a mile in 50 3-5 sec, while Black Mark and' Looh Win occupied 37sec over three furlongs up the baok. Spyglass was a little better than Tunic at the end of five furlongs, whioh occupied lmin 4 3-ssec. Nanna covered six furlongs in lmin 17sec, without being asked to do her best at the finish. She bruised a heel last week, but she'is all right again. Harlequin sprinted half a mile in 50 l-sseo, while Tyne and Monymusk got to the end of. six furlongs in lmin 18 4-sseo. Red Book showed plenty of dash while beating Malvolia over five furlongs in lmin 3seo. The time was fast, but there was a strong wind. Derby Day went once round steadily and then increased the pace over another oirouit. He has done very little fast work, and looks very big in condition. Subterfuge had a slight advantage over Minuet in a half-mile sprint, the post being reached in 48 4-ssec. The two-year-olds, Scornful and Algidus, moved pleasingly, while running two furlongs up the back in 24 3-ssec. Zarita sprinted half a mile in 49sec, going freely, while Nautical was quite as good as Bon while running half a mile up the back in 51 l-ssec. Varnish was out, showing symptoms of lameness, and his task was of a very easy character. King Star and Onlooker jumped off together at the mile post. For half the journey they kept together, but King Star went right .away at the finish, winding up his task in lmin 44 3-ssec. The two-year-old'filly Sweet Smile (San a' Way) sprinted up the back, but she caused a lot of trouble through her fractiousness before she was persuaded to set out on her task. ■ Wellwood, in the presence of his owner, did strong pacing over a couple of circuits. Ho will probably make the trip to Goro, where he has steeplechase engagements next week. The track at Addington was in good order yesterday, but very few fast

work-outs took place, most of the horses being restricted to slow, tasks. About ten o'clock a strong nor'-wester sprang up and there was a lot of dust blowing. Norval King and Truganini went a little moro than a mile and a half at a solid pace, without being fullv extruded. Both horses trotted well and made no mistakes.* J. Smith's pair of trotters. Win All and Paul Huon, did two miles, but they were only sprinted fast in patches. Win All showed plenty of speed but did not trot at all steadily, leaving his feet fre-nently. Paul Muon trotted without a mistake. Eothannicj who appears to be on the big side, was sprinted over several quarters and half.miles, showing plenty of speed. Sol, with R. W. Franks in the saddle, trotted about two miles at threequarter speed. The ex-North Island trotter is'looking bright and well. The Cup candidate, Oinako. looking very well, was not worked fast, but was given nearly two miles at a serviceable soeed. ■ The hors* appeared fc"» do his work more kindly than usual and paced evenly. Icicle, in harness, driven by his trainer, worked ■ with a maiden, driven by F. Vale. Both horses did their work in a satisfactory manner. Icicle appears to have furnished a good deal since he last raced. The Southland owned trotter, Annie K. does not seem to be- yet at. her best. She is doing her work satisfactorily, but has not been thoroughly extended. The mare does not pull bo hard as forjnerly. Red Heather is looking quite at his best and is trotting in fine style. This nne trotter should race well next month. Cox's pair, Reta Peter and Marietta, arc- both working on satisfactorily, but at present the former is showing the better form, both in speed and act.on. B. Jarden had his three Cup candidates, John Dillon, Agathos and Author Dillon, on the track. They worked out over a mile and a half. John Dillon being driven by J. Jarden, Agathos by A. Hendncksen and Author Dillon by his trainer, these being the pilots who will hrmdle them in the big race. Starting off at the two-mile post* Author Dillon gave hi 3 two stable mates about 4see start, but when a round had been covered he had nearly joned them, and pacing on in brilliant style ho beat them easily by about eight lengths, establishing a track record for a mile and a half. John Dillon finished in front of Agathos, but the latter was not driven out. Author Dillon bears a well-trained appearance, looks a little more forward than the other two horses, and commenced much faster than usual. The work-outx was the best that has been accomplished. on the track, and Author Dillon's performance is certain to gain him a lot of fn'ends for the b'g race in November. The owners of the horses were present to witness the performance.
