ROYAL LIFE-SAYING SOCIETY.
SUMNER BRANCH. The report of fhe S'uinnor branch of the Royal Life-savin" Society, to be presented at the annual meeting-, states that during the year there lias been a. very large increase in the membership, sixty new members being clect-cd. The reels and other equipment have been recently overhauled and thoroughly tested and are now in first-class order. Having tried a knpoc belt, the committee found it much superior to the old cork belts and ordered four. While tha season lasted 1 the beach had been well controlled by a tew earnest members, and as a result, a number of people had been assisted white in dangerous water. A team consisting of Messrs Mitchell (instructor) Alexander, Hooper, Truscott, Miller, Lane, Benson and Cossins, visited North Brighton and gained second place tor the Roy Blank Cup. The following members gained the bronze medallion of the Royal Life-saving Society Messrs R, Mitchell, TV. Alexander, TV. Miller, TV. H. Benson, H. Cossins and A. C. O. Allen. Tho branch became affiliated with the newly formed Canterbury Surf Association, a body formed to encourage and assist life-saving in the surf. The following nwnreo have been added to the roll of honour :—Privates C. White, S. White, D. Street, Can nor 11. F. Roberts and Sergeant N. K. Sniytlie. All members on active service are classed as honorary members. In conclusion tho committee appeals to all resident members to take an active part in the work and 1 by taking instruction in resuscitation and reel drill, fit themselves for tho work of safeguarding the beach.
