IN THE EMPIRE'S CAUSE
PRESENTATIONS TO SOLDIERS. Prior to his return to camp, Kx-Fire-man W. Fenton, of the Lyttelton Fire Brigade, was presented on Saturday with a wristlet watch by his comraJdes in the brigade as a slight recognition of his past services. Afc the monthly meeting of the St George Masonic Lodge, Temuka, on Wednesday evening, Dr Rtlgg, who is leaving for Trentham camp on Monday, was presented by the brethren with a Past Master's jewel. The Master, Worshipful Brother G. Tate, in making the presentation, spoke of the many good qualities of Dr Rugg and the great interest he had shown in the lodge. The residents of LowcUffe held a social last week to bid farewell to Private William Dolan. Mr C. B. Nourish presided. An excellent concert programme was given. Occasion was also taken to -welcome home Private J Dwyer, who enlisted with the Fourteenth Reinforcements, and was wounded at Armentieres and invalided home. During an interval in the proceeding* Mr J. Nicholas, on behalf of the Patriotic Committee, presented Privates Dolan and Dwyer with a pipe and tobacco pouch each. The residents of Weedona assembled in the schoolroom last Friday evening to welcome home Gunner Andrew Rae, who has returned from active service. The room was crowded to the doors. Mr Alexander Phillips occupied the chair. Gunner Rae was the first nir*n to be farewelled from tho Weedons district. He left for tho front with the Ist Battalion New Zealand Rink Ritiotade, and saw service in Egypt and France, and was wounded in the great Sommo battle. During _ the evening musical items were contributed hv Mrs Wallace. Misses Thompson, White Miln, Mann, Currncth and Gilmore and Messrs Hunter. M'Kay, Mulcock, Cummins and Hitchins. and Scotch bv Misses Poppy and Francis Etoist. Mr P. F. Ryan, on behalf of the residents, presented Gunner Rae with n cheque. The evening concluded with supper and a dance. Tha concert party was motored out from Christohnrch by tho Buick Sales Company and Messrs M'Clatchu and Co.
