HEATHCOTE BRIDGE.

REPAIRS TO COLOMBO STREET STRUCTURE.

SPREYDON COUNCIL TO PAY £SO.

A letter from the Christchurch City Council regarding the dangerous condition of the bridge over the river Heathcote in Colombo Street south, was read at last evening’s meeting of the Spreydon Borough Council, which was asked to pay one-fourth of the estimated cost (£300) of the repairs necessary. The Mayor (Mr W. H. Winsor) said that according to a report in the “ Lyttelton Times ” of the proceedings at a meeting of the Christchurch Tramway Board, the City Council had written declaring that Spreydon had agreed to contribute a portion of the cost. That was rather high-handed, as Spreydon had not made any such promise. Spreydon was willing to assist, but its share should not be a quarter of the cost. However, he would not cavil at a quarter, if the amount of £75 were not exceeded. It was incorrect to say that the people of Spreydon got much benefit from the bridge. Councillor A. Manhire said that the work should bo done, but Spreydon was asked to pay too much.

Councillor Rudd said that Spreydon should limit its share to £SO.

Finally, it was agreed that Spreydon should agree to subscribe £SO.
