At a meeting of the general committee of the Canterbury Industrial Association last evening, the president (Mr A. W. Jamieson) proposed the following motion on behalf of Mr W. W. Charters, who was unable to bo present: " That, in view of the first ballot For the Second Division being taken daring the nest three months, it is' imperative, in fairness to the men belonging to this division, and to prevent, as tar as possible, the dislocation of business and to minimise industrial disorganisation, local or trying-out camp 3 should bo established, so that no mail should be obliged to give up business or his situation until absolutely sure that when sent to Trentham he will not be turned down as medically unfit, than the position be placed before the Efficiency Board with the request that the board should go into the matter and recommend the Government accordingly. ' Sir Jamieson said that the camps would minimise much hardship. Mr F. Willis seconded the motion. Sir A. F. Drayton said that local camps would have saved the country hundreds of thousands of pounds, and averted the farce of moving men in and out of camp. A vote on the subject in any of the centres would be overwhelmingly carried. The motion was carried, and it was decided to send copies to affiliated associations for endorsement.
A TIMARU RESOLUTION'!
[Per Pbess Association.] ■ TIMARU, July 10.
At a well-attended public meetong tonight under the auspices of the Second Division League all the speakers agreed that it wasi necessary to continue reinforcements till the war was won, but the Government should make adequate provision for dependents. This coulS easily be done out of war profits. A resolution was carried unanimously that the Government should be urged to increase allowances for. wife and one child from 6s 9d to 10s per day, and others in proportion. A meeting of Gapes Valley settlers a few days ago refused to join the league on the ground that it was asking too much.

A Second Division League was formed to-night. It was resolved to ui"g« tho immediate need for the revision of the scale of allowances, pay and pensions, so that dependents of soldiers present and future may not have to appeal to patriotic charity for assistance which should be provided by thp State. It was also resolved to urge facilities for immediate examination of Glasses A and B, expressing the opinion that .# reservist should not be graded by private or semi-official persons, but all ballots taken under the present system, and exemptions other than for physical unfitness granted only by a military Court.
