Tho Victoria- was due to leave Auckland yesterday for Wellington, via ports. She should roach Wellington on Saturday morning, and leave the same day for Dupedin direct. She wi ll arrive in Lyttelton Dunedin on Wednesday. and leave the, same evoking for Sydney, via cast coast ports. Tho auxiliary scow -three masted schooner Eunice arrived from 'Wanganui yesterday maraing: The American ship Diinsyre,. which' was recently sold to the Standard Oil Company by Mayor James Eolph, jun., for £50,000, arrived at Philadelphia lately, after completing a remarkably fast voyage from Caleta_ Buena, The windjammer was only fifty days in making the trip via the Panama. Canal, which is exceptionally good time for a sailing craft. The’ voyage from Christobal to Philadelphia was mado in twenty-two days. INCREASED COST jOF SHIPS. “Lloyd’s List Weekly Summary ” of January 5 cites some interesting cases, which indicate how the value of tonnage has been enhanced by-war conditions. The steamer Hercules was built in 1903 for £12,000. In iOOt she was sold for £32,250 ; while last your she 1 brought £35,000,-and) this year was sola for £250,000. In 1912 the Askclad changed owners for* £14,-500; but has since become apparently worth £158,000. Even sailing! ships have increased beyond all expectations. A typical instance jis that of the Valdivia, Which has now bflpn deemed to be worth £22,500, although in 1912 sho could only bring' £I4OO.
- SQUARE RIGGERS RETURN. During tho years just previous to the breaking' out of the war, old square riggedsail vessels v.-ero soiling for a song, and at .stated intervals’'-lists of the sale of such, fttrgslv under tho -British flag, wero first published in our British and their buyers were to a greatr-extent Norwegians All this has been changed,- however, in the last two. years,, for just as these square riggers seemed about to' disappear ■from the world’s trade routes, the European war brought them back because of the higu freights offering and tho scarcity of tonnage, flu® to tho draft upon the foreign merchant marines by' the belligerent powers admiralties. Moq; of th-i buyers of these ships, save the Now York “ Marine Journal,” have l-ecome wealthy through this sudden turn of the fortunes of tho square A§g«s, while the present generation has- betij given ,an alto-, gather unliokcS-for opportunity to seo them again under sail. 1 • How thov have been manned, however, m an interesting* question. But .that they have been ably"handled goes Without, saying, as few if any losses have been reported tjirotun ignorance in navigating them. This would seem to indicate that there is still a remnant of the world’s population that is o t'ciorit m sailorising; that is, capable of navigating ships Repelled by the winds, though there has been for many yews past little enoiign ■encouragement for any man to follow tnat profession only from sheer love of the sea-
