WELLINGTON SUBURB THREATENED. . '

[Per Pass* Association.] WELLINGTON, March 14. The long dry;spell lias had the effect of parching the hills surrounding the city and many, grass fires,, at various times have caused suburban residents'. To-day the populous locality of Khandallah had its turn., Beginning with an outbreak in the grass beside the railway, apparently, originating from a locomotive spark, the flames spread rapidly and threatened many residences. A willing band soon was organised into fire ■ fighting units and stemmed the advance of the flaming avalanche. One house, owned by Mr Palmer, now in camp, was destroyed, and the town hall and Captain M’Arthur’s residence nearlyjdiared the same fate. The city Fire Brigade’s chemisil engine went out and mounted police also assisted/ Tlie Worst danger is now past, but watchfulness still is necessary.. 1
