Dr Valintine, Inspector-General of Hospitals arrived in Christchurch from Dunedin last night, and went on to Wellington.

Mr T. H. Sherwood, late secretary of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Public Service Association, will go into camp this week with the Twenty-sixth Reinforcements. Lieutenant P. G. Doherty, son of Mr Charles Doherty, of Tinwald, Ashburton. has gained his commission, and is attached to the Twenty-Eighth Reinforcements. He is at present paying r brief visit to his parents.

At a general meeting of returned soldiers held at the Returned Soldiers Club rooms last evening, Messrs H. Si. Cotton and N. B. M'Callum audDr I'. Li Scott were elected representatives of the returned soldiers on the governing body of the club. On Thursday Mr Ernest Newman was presented by the employees of the Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company, Ltd.. Clothing Factory with an oak time-piece, on the occasion of his marriage. The presentation was made by Mr William Menelaus.

Honorary Major James O'Sullivan, Inspector of Equipment and Ordnance Stores in Wellington, has retired from active dutv in the Defence Department at his own request, after nearly thirty-nine years' continuous service, during sixteen years of which he was in charge of tho'Defence Stores Branch. On Friday evening the staff of the Maintenance Department assembled nt .the- permanent way inspector's office at Springfield, to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs H. M'Leman, prior to their transfer to Rangiora. Ganger J. M'Mullan, on behalf of the staff presented a travelling bag with an inscribed plate, to Mr M'Leman, and a silver teapat, also inscribed, to Mrs M'Leman, with alt good wishes from the staff for their future prosperity.

The employees of the Christchurch Brick Company met on Friday evening to bid farewell to their fellow-worker, Mr W. Bisman, who will leave for •Trentham to-morrow night. Mr Harry Barker, in presenting tho guest with a wristlet watch, referred to his long service with the company, and expressed the hopo that he would come back safe and sound. Mr T. N. Horsley also spoke of the long service Mr Bisman had with the company and assured him that should he be .spared to come back he would always find a .position waiting him. At its meeting on Friday the Ashburton County Council carried a resolution heartily' congratulating Lieuten-ant-Colonel G, Buckley and Major J. Studholme (late members of the council) on having obtained the Distinguished Service Order, which was conferred on them by hi s Majesty the King. In moving the resolution, the chairman (Mr C. J. Harper) stated that two years ago, when sitting round the council table, members little thought that these, two men would bo called upon to enter military service in thus great Avar. The distinction conferred upon them was also a great honour to the council. Both men were above the military age. A resolution was ai&o carried congratulating Lieutenant-Colonel Findlay on tho valuable, services he had rendered during the present Avar. The committee of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association at its meeting on Saturday also passed a resolution conrrratulatiTig LieuteuantrColonels Buckicy' and Findlay and Major Studholme pii having gained military distinction. The officers have been active members of the' association.
