FIGHT IN RIGA REGION.

The President still hopes to avert war, but naval and military preparations are proceeding. Attempts were made to sink an American torpedo boat, and also interred German vessels. New York is calm. It is estimated that America has 4,778,000 fit unmarried men available for military service. SUBMARINE WAR. LONDON, February 6.—lt is anticipated that Spain will reply to Germany that she will take measures to protect her industries. Norway intends to continue her trade with Britain. WESTERN FRONT. LONDON, February 5. —The British made progress in file vicinity of Le Transloy and improved their positions near Beaucourt. An official report says that the artillery activity extends over the whole front. • ’ EASTERN THEATRE. PETROGRAD, February s.—Fighting continues east of the Kalnstem road. German attacks were repulsed in the Tirul swamps.
