RED CROSS SOCIETY.
MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The executive of the Red Cross Society met yesterday afternoon; present—Mr A. E. G. Rhodes (in the chair), and Colonel R. H. Rhodes, Hon J. Borthwick, Rev J. R. HewIn nd, and Messrs E. 'Noiclon, H. L. Bowker, jun., J. A. Plosher,. W- T. Robinson and P.. L. Hallensteiu. Apologies for absence were received from ]>r Mickle and Messrs M. L .Reading and Walter Hill. On the motion of the chairman a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Major J. L. Sleeman for his lecture, given recently at the Choral Hall. A motion was passed thanking the committee of Bands Day and also the girls who had assisted on that day. Permission was granted the secretary to pay a cheque of £IOO into the National. Bank for the Red Gross and. Belgium Restoration Fund. Mr Bowker asked if the £IOO would be paid back to the Rod Cross Fund. The chairman stated that it would come back to the fund ultimately, as the festival was for the Red Cross and the Belgium Restoration Fund. . The Timaru Centre sent remits to ho considered at the conference to be hold on February 20. The chairman asked the meeting to authorise him to vote at the conference for a sum of money for extra comforts for the hospitals at Trentlmtu and Featherston. Mr Nordon stroiigly opposed voting the money. He said the people of New Zealand would object to subscribing to the Rod Cross for such purposes, it was relieving the Government of its duty. Colonel Rhodes said lie favoured the idea. Ho thought just as much of the soldier in New Zealand as the one in England. If a man met with an accident is New Zealand and was confined to hospital he was just as entitled to the extra comforts as the man who met with an accident in" England. The Rev J. R. Hewland said he had already heard of objections to paying out moneys for the comforts for soldiers in New Zealand hospitals. The chairman was authorised to vote the money. A letter was received from the Automobile. Association, stating that it accepted the executive's explanation regarding the secretary's salary. the letter was received. A letter was read from Lord Lansdowne, thanking the executive for its fine efforts for the "Our Pay" Fund. Mr Maeloodsmith wrote, stating that ho was forming a patriotic choral society and asked permission to use the name of the Red Cross. The chairman said that it was not a matter that could bo considered off hand. Ho moved that the letter should he referred to the committee. • The motion was carried.
