FLAX FIRES.

PALMERSTON; NORTH, January 29. The Chamber of Commerce to-night passed' a resolution protesting to Mr Hiley, General Manager of Railways, against the Department not having a proper system of patrol in flax areas, in the North Island, thereby jeopardising enormous areas of value in the country.

A fire broke out in S. Seifort's swamp at Tokomaru to-day. Between forty and soventy acres of flax were burned. It is.Burmised that the fire was kindled by a spark from a passing locomotive.
