HANMER SPRINGS.

NATURAL GAS

[FjtOU Ot;R CoitRKSrONDF.NT.]

HANMER SPRINGS, Nov. 25

Now that the military hospital, bath houses, grounds and offices are all lit by electricity instead of the last-named as formerly by the natural gas which was collected in a gasometer, a trial with the gas was made to run a 20' b.p.h. gas engine in the power house, to discover wnat power of gas was available if it was required at any time. Some (500 ft of lin piping was connected from the power house and the gasometer. Tho first night it ran without a load and proved that with a few adjustments it was in every way suitable. Then for two nights it was tried with a full load, viz, 100 lights, and proved very satisfactory. The gas is particularly clean and is quite equal (with the present supply) of running a 6 or 8 h.p. engine for eight hours per day; and v as there are indications that plenty of gas could be obtained in the near vicinity, a small outlay, for tho purpose of boring and erection of gasometers, would mean that the electric plant could be run at very slight expenso over and above the wages of the man in charge. As it is intended to light the streets and also most of the houses in the township with electricity it is hoped that the Government will look further into the matter.
