BRISBANE, November 24. The northern ports are practically isolated as the result of the interruption of the coastal service. There is a threatened food shortage. ; • -,:. The coal conference reached a deadlock and adjourned until Monday, when Mr Hughes has promised to state the Government's intentions. STATE COAL. LARGE STOCKS IN HAND IN CHRISTCHURCH. The local office of the State Coal Depot is receiving orders from householders far above the quantities usually ordered at this season of the year. It may be that people are getting anxious as to the effect on New Zealand coal stocks that the Australian strike may have, and . are' ordering for future rather than present requirements. A representative of the "Lyttelton Times interviewed the manager ot the Christchurch office of the State Coal Depot yesterday, and was informed that ample supplies were in hand, and, so far as could he seen, there was no .liklihood of a shortage. The head, office in Wellington fixed the prices, hut so far no hint had been received that the price of State coal might be advanced.
