—.— l NEWS AND NOTES. Acceptances for the Horn rata Racing Club’s meeting will close to-night", at nine o’olock. j The Victoria Racing Club’s spring meeting will ! bo concluded to-day, just a fortnight .after the time when it would have closed under normal weather conditions. The weather was -showery on Thursday, when the South. Canterbury Jockey Club opened, its spring meeting. Heavy rain set in at night, and frequent showers foil' yesterday. The ; sky cleared in . the. afternoon, however, and the prospects last night were favourable for the second day's racing. Good acceptances Jinve been received for most of the ©vents; and the eo'ubse should be in good order, though the going will probably he slow. A special train will leave Christchurch at 9 a.m. ! to-day, leaving Tiinaru on the return journey at G. 45 p.m. | Mr J. B. Reid * was represented by ; Jviliena, Kilkee and .ELlrush on the first day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. They ail failed badly, and they returned home without fulfilling their engagements ' oil the second day. Among the .horses down to compete on the second day of the South Canterbury meeting are Multoa, All Ready, Ardmore, Leading Lady and Sir Tarka, who were not out on Thursday. Tho news that Sasunof is on his way back to New' Zealand in company, with other members of Air W. G. Stead s team, seems to dispose of the report that the Melbourne Cup winner might be sold to an Indian sportsman. -VI. Hobbs has engaged boxes for eight horses at Ellerstie, and the whole team will probably race at the. summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, where lvilboy and Sasunof should be big attractions. At the Tasmanian Racing Club s | meeting'this month, the Elswick Purse was won by Tuticorn, by Sarto—Chinook. The yearling brother to this youngster lias recently taken up his quarters at J. M. Prosser’s Porirua stable. i A North Island sportsman who was i present, when tho Melbourne Cup was run, says the display of horsemanship by some of the riders in the race was very crude, and as a whole the jockeys in the Dominion have little to learn from their brethren in Australia. He says though Sasanof won the Cup young Foley was altogether too anxious.' Six furlongs from homo he was a long way behind the leaders, and then went round the field on the turn before entering the straight. When he arrived in a lino for home he was four lengths clear of the field and unbeatable, so well was ho going, but on hearing the public crying out for the favourite. Shepherd. King, Foley ptilled out the Whip, and rode Sasanof very hard for a furlong. Over the last bit he dropped his hunds on the gelding’s neck, and ran home like that. The visitor thinks that Sasanof won because he was immeasurably superior to the other horses at the weights. The Methven Racing Club has made several substantial improvements to the course in preparation for the annual meeting to take place next month. Tlio fences in the saddling paddock have been extended, which will allow of three times the space. The secretary’s office 'has been removed, and .tlio old office will in future be at the disposal of the jockeys and clerk of scales. Provision has been made for accommodating the secretary and staff in the grandstands. The stakes will be the same as last year, namely £SOO, together with a £25 cup. A special train will run, nnd there will be an additional one for horse-owners. SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. [Pkr Press Association.] TIMARU,. November 24.
