SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES

Some exceptionally interesting racing was witnessed at the Scath Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting yesterday. Tho start of the day's proceedings was far frpm promising, the hurdlo race being a dull procession. Tho remainder of the programme, however, provided plenty of excitement, the finishes being exceptionally close. Half heads divided the placed horses in the , second event, while tho next provided a head win with a dead heat for second place, the sixth race being a repetition of that finish. A neck margin in tho fourth race and half a length in the fifth were comparatively easy wins, but the concluding event provided a return, to the head victories. Taken all round it was the best day for finishes ever experienced on tho Wnshdyke course, and jt would bo difficult to recall its erfual anywhere. The handicapper, Mr J. E. Henrys, came in for hearty congratulations on tho excellent results.

A. Press Association message received from Sydney last evening stated that Mr \V. G. Stead's horses, including Kilboy and Saaanof, had left for New Zealand on tho Niagara. Bore gave an indifferent dispjay in the hurdlo raco at tho South Canterbury meeting yesterday. At no stage did he gallop with his usual dash, but tho atmospheric conditions were not at all favourable for a horse affected in the wind. In the Trial Handicap at the South Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting yesterday the places were filled by three horses owned in North Canterbury, though tho winner, All Serene, is trained at Wnshdyke by S. Trilford. All Sereno has not done much racing, but he appears to be a more solid customer than his half-brother Melford, and he should bring All Red further distinction as a sire. Kilkee and Marianne were coupled on the totalisator in the Trial Handicap at the South Canterbury meting yesterday, Marianne, though racing in the colours of another Otago sportsman, being held on lease from Mr J. B. Reid. She is a three-year-old filly by Kenilworth," sire of ithe Australian crack, Wolaroi, but she does hot show much promise at present. Ringfonn was responsible for an attractive performance in winning the Jockey Club Handicap at the South Canterbury meeting yesterday, though he was probably lucky to beat Margerine, whoso rider was hampered by tho loss of a stirrup. Ringform has done a lot of hard racing this season, but ho has thrived on it, and looks better now than at any time of his career. The Finn, who won the Spring Stakes at the South Canterbury meeting yesterday, is a brother to Luland, a very successful member of the team which Mr H. E. Taylor has been racing in Australia this season. The Finn can muster up a. fair turn of speed, but he is a long way below the class represented by his relative. British Rose was very unlucky in the Korrytown Welter Handicap at the South Canterbury meeting yesterday. He got off well, but was unable to hold his place. As a result, he got into a very bad position, and he had a wide gap to bridge after the straight was reached. SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. SPRING MEETING. [Fpon Our. ■ CoRBEsroNKEXi.J TIMARU, November 23. The South Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring Meeting was commenced to-day under threatening conditions. Bain set in early in tb.3 morning, and showers continued until after the first race, when the weather improved, though heavy clouds were in evidence for tho remainder of the day. Tho rain just sufficed to lay the dust, and the course was in good order. There was an average attendance, and the totalisator investments amounted to .-£10,006, compared with £11,134 on the corresponding day Inst year, when there was an extra raoa on the programme.
