PATRIOTIC SOCIETIES.
-MEETING OF ADVISORY BOARD. A meeting of the Advisory Board of tho New Zealand Federation of Patriotic War Relief Societies was held in Wellington on Thursday. Mr L. O. H. Tripp .(Wellington) presided and there, were • also present the Hon J. T. Paul (Otago), and Messrs H. W. Kirkwood (Taranaki), V. Larmer (Auckland), W. W. Snodgrass (Nelson), J. J. Dougall (Christchurch). Hope Gibbons (Wanganui), E. H; Williams (Hawke’s Bay),'.G. Elliott (Auckland), AY- H. Cox (Southland), and J. ,J. Grimmond (Southland). • An application for a contribution to the Catholic Field Service Fund was received. It was decided to reply that the High Commissioner in London , had ample money, and would he ready, to meet: the requirements of the accredited chaplains of the various denominations. The Minister of Defence’wrote with regard to the allowance for widowed mothers, stating thnt.the question had received very careful consideration ,by him and the Recruiting Board, and he rCgretted .that it was not thought advisable to make any further alterations. A case was mentioned where a widowed mother had been refused an allowance because,of an investment which brought her in five shillings a week. She was formerly dependent on her son,' who is married. It was decided to bring the matter before the Minister.
