NEWS AND NOTES

Acceptances for the South Canterbury Jockey Club's mooting will close to-night, at, nine o'clock. L. H. Hewitt and C. Emerson were riding at Win ton this week, as wore two Btccarton apprentices, but they did not yet among the winners on the first daj. During the running of the Winton Cup on Wednesday Magdala. tell, while a little further on Canrobur was interfered with. An inquiry resulted in W. O'Halloran being fined £5 for interfering with Magdala and £5 for crossing Canrobur. O'Halloran rode All Ready, winner of the race, and by many people he was considered ' ery fortunate to escape with a fine. l\ Coffey, who has been training horses in Sydney for about two years, returned to Wellington this week, and has since gone on to New Plymouth, lie brought back with' him Tea Tore, Bell Boyne (sister to Rewi Poto) and an unnamed two-year-old filly by Cardinal Beaufort from Cintra. Toa Tore won several races in Sydney, but the other pair were not started. The programme for tho Wellington Racing Club's summer meeting was passed at the meeting of stewards held this week. Compared with last year, the stake money has* been increased by 700 sovs. The Anniversary Welter Handicap on the opening day has-been increased from .100 to 400 sovs. * On the second day the Disposal Stakes has been deleted, and in its place the Camp Handicap, of 200 sovs, five furlongs (hack conditions), substituted. '.Hie January Welter Handicap has been increased' from 250 sovs to 800 sovs, Racing Club Handicap from 600 to 750 sovs, Fitaherbert Handicap from 250 to 1500 sovs, Douro Cup from 350 to 400 sovs. On tho third day the Melrose Welter Handicap has gone up from 250 to 300 sovs, Hopeful Stakes Handicap from 350 to 400 sovs, and City Handicap from 300 to 4.00 sovs. The win scored .by All Ready in tho Winton Cup this week did not come out of its turn. The season before last, when he was a three-year-old, he gavo promise of developing into a really good horse. Last season, however, he failed to realise expectations, as he did not win a race, though he was placed in two of his engagements. Early in the season he was meeting docent "class opposition, as he was regarded as a New Zealand Cup possibility, but he gradually worked down the scale, appearing more than once in very modest company. He showed fair form at Wingatui last month, so that his win at Winton was.not altogether unexpected. There is no doubt that he can gallop, but-at times he has not shown much heart for racing.

Night Alarm, winner of tho Trial Stakes at Winton on Wednesday, is a three-year-old gelding by Calibre—Midnight, by Benzoin—Tinwald Beauty, by Perkin Warbeck ll.—Beauty Sleep, by Medallion—Siesta, by Traducer from imported Hammock, so that he is bred on most attractive lines. Night Alarm was bred by Mr J. Grigg, and he was trained at'Riccarton last season, but failed in both his engagements. Later in the season, however, he was sold in Southland, along with others of Mr Grigg's horses. There was nothing of special merit in his winning performance at Winton this week, as he had only a moderate lot of horses behind him. Early speed, however, has not been the strong point with Calibre's stock, and it raav be that Nigbt Alarm, following the lead of Rorke's Drift and Gunrest, ,will bring further distinction to the Light Artillery horse. Sasanof's chance in the Melbourne Cup was greatly fancied by a number of Oaulfield trainers, among them being E. A. Connelly, who, after seeing him gallop on the morning of Derby Day, was more than ever confident. Those who regularly watch the "work at Oaulfield proclaimed the gallop done by Sasanof the best done on the track this season. Kilboy went right out of favour for the Melbourne Cup as a result of his defeat in the Victoria Derby. He moved a trifle stiffly prior to that event. It is stated, however, that his trainer, M. 'Hobbs, had no fear concerning the. result, nor did Mr Luttrell, who is credited with the statement that the Kilbroncy colt would win easily and would also outstay his stable companion, Sasanof, in the Melbourne Cup. The Sydney writer, "Pilot," had the following reference to Kilboy's display in the Derby:—lt is difficult to make excuses for Kilboy. Of course the track was tho first thing alleged to be responsible for his failure, but he acted well enough in it until pressure was applied in the straight. Then, again, tlie going was very dead, if not actually soft, when he scored in Sydney. Almost needless to say his joint owners and trainer were greatly disappointed, and if ho does not show to much greater advantage in the Cup, presumably he will be given a holiday before again being raced. He was the youngest of the Derby competitors, as he will not* bo actually three years old until near the end of this month. VICTORIAN RACING. . By TelegTaph—Preen Association—Copyright. MELBOURNE, November. 16. Heavy hailstorms and rain liave rendered the Flomington course unsafe and the fourth day of the Victoria Racing Club's meeting has been postponed till Saturday. The Oaulfield meeting on Saturday has been postponed to avoid clashing. THE MELBOURNE CUP. SASANOFS VICTORY. SYDNEY, November 16. Sasanof's Melbourne Cup victory has aroused discussion on the conditions of tho race. Some critics consider that the whole question of handicapping three-year-olds should be revised, pointing out that if a three-year-old is capable of winning a weight for age race and is handicapped below that scale in tho Cup, tho weight should be readjusted. Sasanof was handicapped 6st 111 b in the Cup, 9lb less than the weight-for-age scale. He carried 6st 121 b, including lib overweight. A month earlier he won tho Spring Stakes, a.weight for age race, carrying 7st 41b. NEWMARKET BLOOD STOCK SALE. (Received November 16, 8.50 p.m.) MELBOURNE, November 16. At the Newmarket blood otock sales tht demand was slack and many lots wore passed in. Tho top price was for Court Jester, 700 guineas.
