ROYAL LIFE SAVING SOCIETY

DOMINION COTJNCHa The Dominion Council of the Royal Life Saving Society met on Thursday evening at the Y.M.C.A. Rooms. Mr K. Bassett (Ofrago) presided, and there were present Messrs B. J. Ager (Canterbury), J'. Wyn Irwin (Wellington), Walter Johnson (Hawke's Bay), BS. Knox (Taranaki) and F. N. Kerr (Auckland). The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote stating that a voucher for tho annual grant of £75 had been passed for payment. Correspondence was received from the Central Executive, London, and the Now South Wales Centre, dealing with of awards. The chairman reported that, although a duplicate order had been sent out to replace the Rangatira order, which had eventually arrived safely, still the phenomenal success of tho pa3t season had already exhausted these. Ho" had cabled for further supplies, and was assured by the head centre that they would be fully required. The Wanpanui Head Centre wrote with reference to on examination for the diploma and thanking the council for a ruling that examination marks might be communicated to tho candidate, pointing out in what respect he had failed, to enable him to become more proficiortt in thai respect. Mr P. A. Schwartz, honorary secretary of the newly formed North Taroneki Head Centre, forwarded minutes of special meeting complying with the council's requirements and an application for recognition, which had been endorsed and forwarded to the central authorities in London. He stated that a. shield hod been presented by one of tho officials of his centre for surf reel competition, and that six miles of beach was under their control. One hundred and eight awards had been gained during the past season, being double that of previous years. Numerous demonstrations had been given in the surrounding districts, and the local Education Board was giving its offioial support. Mr H. Schwartz's request to the counoil to define the education district as tho boundary for tho head centre was held over awaiting a report from the Auckland Letters were received from both the honorary secretary and the chief instructor of the Auckland Head Centre showing that after being dormant for about three years life saving had taken a new lease of life. Five honorary instructors were appointed, and instruction was being given to tho Cadets Boy Scouts and most of the swimming clubs. A strong eommitteo had been appointed, and the results of examinations for awards promised to rival' that of tho other head centres. Similar good reporto wore received from Wellington and Otago. In reply to a request from the Hawke s Bav Head Centro it was decided to pay for the cost of tho 1915 season Nelson Shield surf reel medals out of tho Government m-ant the cost of medals to be thus deducted from the head centre's share.
