SPORTING.
NEWS AST) NOTES. Wrestler was scratched for the Stewards' Handicap at 3 p.m. yesterday. There, wa.s little work of interest on the Riccarton tracks yesterday, but with visiting horses putting in an appearance from all quarters, there should be plenty of interest in the track doings during the nest week. H. Cutte. in charge of Adjutant, Brambletye and Glen, Helen, returned home yesterday from Trentham. The Yaidhurst trainer, R. O'Donnell, returned from Trentham yesterday with The Toff and Ample. Another batch of North Island horses, consisting of Merry Roe, Housewife, Lord Kenilwortb, Sanacre, Bleriot, Mullingar; Hyenas, Hyttus. Gladful, Hymestra, Hymeone and Mount Joy, arrived yesterday to fulfil engagements at" the spring meeting of ' the Canterbury Jockey Club. As a result of her victory in the Trotting Club Handicap at Reefton on Thursday, Sceptre has been penalised a further 'loyds in the Empire Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting. There is a freely expressed opinion that many of the horses who failed t 0 show any form at the Wellington Racing Club's meeting this week are likely to do a lot better when they line up for their engagements at Riccarton. Their failure at Trentham was evidently anticipated, judging from the forlorn prices at which some of them started. The Golfer, who won the hurdle race at the Poverty Bay Turf Club's meeting on Thursday, is an Australian-bred gelding, who is now trained at Trentham by A. J. M'Laughlin. L. Wilson will ride Indigo in th£ New Zealand Cup, in which the pair were associated last year. This will be Indigo's third appearanco in a New Zealand Cup field. The New Zealand Cup candidate Want is credited with running his best race of the season this week, when he was beaten into second place by Moulu in the principal event at the Waver-ley-Waitotara meeting. This scarcely reads like good Cup form. Favourable reports are current in the north regarding the prospects of Chortle in the Stewards' Ha'ndicao, The Ashburton Trotting Club has decided to adopt the yajde system of handicapping in connection with its meeting on Boxing Day. Stakes amounting to £1550 will be distributed by the Ashburton Trotting Club at its Boxing. I>ay meeting. This represents an inci-ease of £SO over the amount given last year. The Auckland steepleohaeer, Okaihau, has returned homo, after a successful trip to Sydney, where he won a race at City Tattersall's meeting.
The substantial place money provided by some of the big clubs in Australia provides quite a solid solatium for defeat. At the recent meeting at Randwick, Polycrates won £l.lOO and Cetigne £BOO without capturing a race. The committee of the Rakaia Racing Club will decide next week as to whether the annual race meeting will be held this year. Since the last meeting a large number of young men who had supported tho club have enlisted, and as the meeting oators mainly for hacks, it is thought by some that there will be a difficulty in getting .entries. Several local enthusiasts have offered to guarantee the prize money, providing the day's sport can be arranged. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. [Pee Pbsss Association.] AUCKLAND. October 27.
