Turner. W. (Miss J. Turner, Penrith. Cumberland, sister). > PERSONAL NOTES. . Captain A. R. Moyle, killed in action, was a painter employed by Mr F Lewis, of Timaru. He enlisted in the ambulance and was promoted' to the rank of captain shortly before his death. He was twenty-six years of ago, and' leaves a widow and two young children. Trooper Samuel Cooper, who was killed in action on September 17 in France, was born and educated at Athol, and finished his schooling at Lumsden District High School. He then took to farming until last December, when he enlisted, leaving with the 2nd Wellington Battalion. He was twenty-seven years of age, and took a keen interest in all local sports, and was very popular in the district. He was a member of M.U., 1.0.0. F., Loyal Lumsden Lodge. Sergeanfc-Major Pruden, who was recently reported missing, and is now reported killed in action on September 15, was the third son of Mr George Pruden, of Kati-Kati, Bay of Plenty. Before enlisting ho was a farmer at Te Puki. He leaves a wife and six children, his only son being with the Fifteenth Reinforcements. He was a sergeant .in the Volunteers, and always keenly interested in the Territorials. He was born at Mason's Flat, North Canterbury, and was forty-three years of age. I Private T. W. Cowens, killed in action, left with the Fifth Reinforcements, and went through the Gallipoli campaign. He was twenty-three years of age. His parents reside at Bennetts Junction. His brother, Private Robert James Cowens, of London Street, Lyttelton, left with the Fifteenth Reinforcements. Rifleman John Byrno, killed in action in France on September 16, was nineteen years of age, and was educated at the Marist Brothers' School, Greymouth. He was the only son of Mr and Mrs W. Byrne, of Blaketown, Greymouth, and left with the Eleventh' Reinforcements. Private Frederick Arthur Charles Wooldridge (killed in action,in Franco) w?,s the proprietor of a fish shop in Dunedin when he enlisted with the Ninth Reinforcements. He was thirty-, six years of age and fought in the Boer war. He was a keen having served in the Garrison Artillery in the Old Country for sixteen years. Mr A. Boulnois, of Aylesbury, has received a cable from the War Office, London, announcing the death of his eldest son, Captain Edmund Boulnois, of the 21st West Yorkshire Regiment.. Captain Boulnois was killed in action on October 23. Mr J. Cullen, Commissioner ot Police, has received cabled advice of the death of his son. .Gunner Leo Gerald Cullen, of the New Zealand Field Artillery, in France. Gunner Cullen, who was twenty-three years of age, left
with the Sixth Reinforcements. He was wounded on October-13,■ and died two days later. Before onlisting he was for some time in the service, of Messrs John Burns and Co., warehousemen, Auckland, and for a shorter term with Messrs M'Noil and Co-, Wellington. Private Fritz (Fred) Bulling (died of wounds) was the third son of Mr Max Bulling, a well-known farmer at Itimu, Southland. He was twenty-one years of age this month. Ho was horn at Forest Hill, Southland, and educated at Otatara. He assisted on his father's farm-, but eventually joined the staff of the Edendalo factory. He was wounded in action in on September 15, and died on October 7. Private Leonard M. Percy, reported having died of wounds, received on September 14, was the son of Mr H. C. Percy, of Ashburton, and was twentytwo years of ago. Private Percy was educated at the Ashburton Borough and High Schools. He gained » scholarship when ho was twelve years of age, and passed the Matriculation examination at the age of fifteen years. Alter leaving school ho wa« employed at the Bank of New Zealand, at Ashburton, and was subsequently transferred to Palmersten North, and thence to Dunedin. He enJisted at Dunedin and joined the Eighth Mounted Brigado. He was transferred later to the Machine-gun Section. : Private David Davidson .(missing) is the only son of Mr and Mrs D. Davidson, of Saddle Hill. Ho was born a* Dunedin in 1872 and was educated at the Union Street School. Ho enlisted in Dunedin, but could not get away as soon as he wished, so he went to Lnvercargill and left from, there , with the Ninth Reinforcements.. Rifleman Alexander S. Nicol, Timaru, wounded and now seriously ill in the New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst, left with the Ist Battalion of the Rifle Brigade, was in the fighting .against the Senussi- in Egypt -.last Christmas, and has been in France since May of this year. His brother. Corporal R. S. Nicoji'.is with the Sixteenth Reinforcements.. Private Thomas Nimmo, wounded in France, left New Zealand, with the Main Body of the New Zealand Expeditionary. Force, and he took part in the big engagement at the Suez Canal against the Turks. >Ho was also at the lauding on the Peninsula on April,2s, 1915, and went through the Gallipoli campaign. He came off in the last barge that left Anzac at the evacuation, and has been on the western front since April last. Mr J. R. Brunt, Lin wood,'has received, a cable .from his son, Private J. Harband Brunt, who has been reported wounded twice, that he is progressing favourably. He is at present in a London hospital. . Private Sidney Bell, wounded on October 1, was born at Radcliffe-on-Trent, Nottingham, England, ,and' is forty-four years of age. He served in the South African war is a sergeant and resided there thirteen-years. He then came to New Zealand five years ago, and worked as a general farm hand in the Killincby district. He enlisted a year ago and went in the Tenth Reinforcements. Private R'. K. M'Candless, reported wounded in France, was bora at ■ Moville, County Derry, Ireland, and was educated at Foyle College, Londonderry. He came to. Now Zealand in 1914 with his uncle, Mr W. T. Fulton, of Lakeside, with whom he had lived since the death of his father. He was nineteen years of age, and left with the Eleventh Reinforcements. Private James A. .Webb, wounded in action on September 27 is the son of James Webb, Springbrook, St Andrews. He is twenty-two years of age, and prior to his enlistment he was a butcher at the Pareora freezing works. He was a keen lover of sport, especially as a cyclist in the St Andrews and Timaru districts, and was also a good rifle shot. He was in the'machine gun section, and took part in the big rovlew in Paris during July. Rifleman W. Bushell, wounded oh September 18, is the only son of Mr T. Bushell, late of. Rangiora, and was seventeen when he enlisted. ; Ho tried to go with the' Tenth Reinforcements, but was stopped, and got away with the Eleventh. He was working on a mill at Eangiora for a while, but was in the Burnside rolling iron mills.at the timsof enlistment. . .. Private J. Stephens, reported' wounded on September 17, is a son of Mr J. A. Stephens. Methven, and left with the Tenth Reinforcements. He was educated at the Lyndhurst School, and was eighteen years of age when he enlisted. Previously ho was engaged in farming pursuits. Private Fred Wylie, previously, reported wounded, now reported killed in action, was a son of the late Mr and Mrs R. Wylie, of Kaiapoi. He was born at Tararu, Thames, and lived for a number of years at Lyttelton, where he was educated. He was an active member of the Lyttelton Rowing dub and won local renown as a long-dis-tance athlete. Nine years ago.he accompanied his parents to Kaiapoi, where he gained many friends. He became an active member of the local hockey, cycling, rowing and bowling clubs, and gained general esteem in the fields of play and business.
