I .MONTHLY MEETING. . The Lyttelton Harbour Board met at Lyttelton yesterday afternoon; present —Mr M. .1. ,Miller (chairman), the Hon R. Moore, M.L.C., and Mecsrs C. Allison, T. I>. Boag. F. Horreil, J. J. Dougall, R. M. Soiets, H. F. Nicoll, J. J. Graham, G- Scott, 11. Friodlander and J. Stcrry. The chairman reported that since the last meeting the following sums had been paid into tho harbour fund account:—Wharf ago £2-68 Isi 7d, pilotage and port charges £1165 los 2d, towage, storage, etc., £IO2B 5s lOd, a total of £l7b2 16s 7d. The ordinary caih receipts for the nine months- ended September 30 amounted to £48,912 Is, ab compared with £SO/221 2s 7d oaring tho corresponding period of last year. The harbour fund was in credit £l72* 13s Bd, and in addition tho sum of £1277 lis od stood to the credit of tho special renewal fund. Accounts recommended for payment amounted to £3548 8s 4d. During the mouth of September 175 vesseh, comprising five oversea and 170 coastal and intercolonial vessels, had entered Lyttelton with a total tonnage, of 111.251 ton?, a 3 compared with 206 vessels, aggregating 180,810 tons, during tho corresponding mouth last yearThe report of the month's work presented by the engineer (Mr C. J. ItWilliams) was adoptoft. The Harbour Improvement Committeo recommended that consideration of tho question of establishing a superannuation scheme for tho board's employees should bo deferred until the termination of the war. The committee having considered tho question of repeating "the order for the supply of a nc-w fifty-ton derrick crane, recommended that Ihe matter should be held over to await further developments. The committee recommended that the attention of Ihe senior officer of tho New Zealand Division should be again directed to the claim for damage to a fender by the s.s. Waipori. The Government astronomer having asked for tho loan of the board's astronomical clock and offered to drop the time-ball at Lyttelton at certain times by a current direct from tho Hector Observatory, the eommitteo recommended that the board's clock should bo lent to tho observatory for twelve months. After careful consideration or tn© engineer's report with reference to the installation of electric: capstans on ha. 6 jetty, the committee recommended that the matter should be held over in the meantime. The committee recom-j mended that J. Toomey, head boat-. man, be granted six months leave, on full pay as from September 14, lyib, or that he be given suitable light employment, if available. Messrs Lufaro and Sons, the lessees of No. 7 nsh chamber at tho board's cool stores, being unwilling to pay the rental of £SO a year required by the Railway Department in respect of the siding serving the cool store, the committee recommended that Ltifarc's lease be cancelled and other arrangements made for storage retirements. The report was adopted. The Sailors' Home Committee recommended that in consequence of tho increased cost of supplies for the Home, Hie charge for board and lodging bo increased from 17s to 18s per week as rom November 1. 1916, until fur her notice- and that tho charge for beds Sninm'easedfvomlsto Is 0d per night Tho report was adopted.
