MOTORING.

CANTERBURY \r;TOM01«LB , ASSOCIATION. 1 ' ,' MONTHLY MEETING. Tha committee of the Canterbury Automobile Association met last evening, Mr A. S- Clarkson presiding over * good attendance. - Tho financial statement showed that the receipts amounted to £76 18s and the expenditure to £69 17s lOd. The credit balance totalled £132 7s 2d. Accounts were passed for payment amounting.to £l4 ss.

The town clerk, in reply to the association, wrote stating that every person driving a motor-car within the city required a certificate of ability, whether ho or she owned the car or not. The motor inspector was taking active steps to take proceedings against drivers not possessing a certificate. After some discussion regarding the work of inspection, the chairman said that the motor inspector should not be required to do clerical work, but should put in all his time outdoors. (Hear, hoar.)

Mr F. W. Johnston suggested that the City Council should appoint motorcar salesmen as sub-agents to issue certificates of ability. Another thing that wanted remedying was the manner people 16itered on the street corners, blocking the traffic. Those loiterers needed regulating moro than motorists did. Finally it was agreed to write to the City Council again recommending the appointment of sub-agents as proposed by Mr Johnston.

The town clerk also wrote regretting that the : by-law regulating the time during which motor vehicles could remain unattended in that part of Hereford Street between Colombo Street and Oxford Terrace could not be altered by way of extending the time allowed.

Letters of thanks were received from tho Citizens' Defence Corps and'the Young Men's Christian Association for help given during recont public appeals by members of the association.

Two resignations of members, were accepted with regret.

The following new members were elected:—Messrs G. Ollivier, C. W. Colville, J. L. Webb, J. Lethaby,.F. Ashby, T. Aspell, C. I. Jennings, E. B. Rimingfon, -E. P. Smith, A. E. White, F. Fairweather, W. R. Sanders, G. Simpson, D. Bates, H. P.- Finemore, J. B. Merrott, W. T. Olivor, S. R. Wright, C. S. Young, J. Briggs and Mrs J. Tutton.

It was stated that tho membership was now nearly 700. Consideration was given to the "platform" of the association (previously published) as arranged by Mr P. R. Climie, and most of the clauses were agreed to, or referred to various committees. The clause relating to the sMpply of tyres was deleted. Mr Johnston suggested that it was time for. the association to consider the purchase of half to three-quarters of an acre of land on which to build a garage for the storage of members' cars. He said that on some days of the week it was impossible tq find "stabling" for cars in Christchurch. It was decided to 6et» apart December 22 and December 23 as "Red Cross" days on which the members of the association will take charge of the Cathedral Square depots, and will collect material and goods for sale on those days. It was further decided to assist the patriotic motor carnival, and to recommend that the proceeds should bo given to the Bed Cross Society.
