"MADE IN NEW ZEALAND."

FOSTERING LOCAL MANUFACTURES. DEPUTATION TO MINISTERS. [Per Pbess Association.] WELLINGTON, October $. A deputation representing the Wellington Trades and Labour Council, the Furniture Trades Workers and Boot Operatives' Federation, waited on tho Hon J. Allen and the Hon W. H. Herries tjhis afternoon to urge legislation for the branding of all local manufactures "Made in New Zealand." It was pointed out that the largest boot manufacturers were also the largest iudentors, and that the tendency was to encourage the prejudice against tho locally-made article in order to make larger profits on the imported article. Tho Ministers' replies were sympathetic. It was stated that- the request was largely a matter of policy, and that it was necessary to defer consideration until Mr Massey and Sir Josoph Ward were consulted. Ministers further stated that any legislation would have to meet with the approval of the Labour Bills Committee, to which evidence would have to be submitted to show that the public now showed no prejudico against local manufactures.
