THE STATISTICIAN'S WORK. [Pkr Press Association.] ; WELLINGTON, October 1
Mr Eraser, Uovernment Statistician, estimates the uumoer ot men who should be on tho roll of the Expeditionary Force Reserve at 200,000, ot whdni 183,(580 already have applied for enrolment. Tho balance probably included a large number already in camp. Steps will bo taken to trace defaulters and bring them to book. At present Mr Eraser is concentrating his energies on getting everything in readiness to hold a ballot, if necessary, at tho) end of the present month to fill shortages in tho Twenty-first and Twenty-second Reinforcements. ltolU for tho recruiting districts gazetted last week are being prepared, but it will be possible to take a ballot if required, without waiting for the completion of those rolls.
THE POSITION IN DUNEDIN
.. [From Our CoRREsroNUKNt.]
DUNEDIN, September 30. The O'tago military district is confronted with almost a hopeless task to avoid the humiliation cr a record shortage of recruits for the Twenty-second Reinforcements next month. Under the new boundaries Dunedin group, which formerly comprised practically the city alone, .but now comprises in addition the couuties of Peninsula, Waikouaiti and Taiori, has been called upon to find 262 men. This moans that the total quota for tho group has practically boon doubled, requirements hitherto on an averago having been about 125. Otago district has to find this
time i)B'2 men, or about 175 more than usual, a consequence of previous shortages. Those roost intimately associated with voluntary recruiting
candidly admit that in existing circumstances' their task is well nigh hopeless. The position is most serious as regards tho Dunedin group, which has to make good country shortages.
