Splendid congregations attended the anniversary services of Durham Street Methodist'Sunday School yesterday, the evening service being crowded to the doors, and some wore unable to gain admission. Tho scholars of the school, assisted by tho church choir, sang special hymns at each service, and several scholars recited lessons from the Scriptures. Tho preachers were the Rev i>. Knight in the morning, Mr L. M. Isitt, M.P., in the afternoon, and tho president of tho church (Rev A. C. Lawry) in the evening.

Dr Thacker, M.P, who left for America ou Saturday night, proposes during his visit to make a special study of the methods adopted by tho Canadian Government for placing returned soldiers on the land, and generally into tho Dominion's system of promoting settlement cud in opening up new areas. He also proposes to investigate all matters appertaining to technical education, the uses of elec-i tricity for light, heat power and motive power. Dr Thacker is keenly interested in the latest developments in surgical appliances, and he will make it his business to make a close study of the latest surgical triumphs for tho purpose of assisting those who have been wounded and maimed on the battlefield. With this aim in view the member for Bast Cbristchurch proposes to made himself thoroughly familiar with the most up-to-date artificial limbs and all other appliances for the use of; men deprived of their limbs. Tho public meeting to consider matters in connection with tho commandeering of meat, by the Government which has been convened by Messrs W. F. Parkinson, president of the Canterbury Sheepownors' Union, and G. D. Greenwood, chairman of the North Canterbury Shecpfarmers' Freezing Company,'and which is to he held at Christchurch next Wednesday, promises to be woll supported by farmers and others interested. The question lias been discussed for some time past bv the various branches of the Farmers' Union and other bodies, and it is understood that the resolution passed in connection with the matter will be brought befo"e the meeting. The Dunedin correspondent of the "Lyttelton Times" states that the Laud Purchase Board has acquired a 600-acre farm near Mataura Island. Tho land is "the best in tho district, and in good condition, and will probably be cut up into seven or eight farms for discharged soldiers. Tho Red Cross Committee is sending £IOO to tho High Commissioner for the Nurses' Christmas Gift Fund. Of this amount the sum of £B7 5s lOd was collected by the " Press." From a list supplied by General Henderson it appears that there are fifty-nine Canterbury nurses on active servico in England, France, Egypt and elsewhere.

The classes to bo taken this evening wdl be as follows: —Pianoforte tolo, vocal solo (female), soprano solo, recitation (male and female), dumbbells and a senior dialogue by the Richmond Methodist Band of Hope.

At the meeting of Beckenham-Fish-ertou residents on Saturday night, the chairman (Mr Charleson) referred to the scarceness of slot telephones in Fisherton. He said the time was opportune, for the erection of. another slot telephone in Sandwich Road. The nearest slot machine at present was the one- in Fisher Street. It was decided to write to Mr Ell and the PostmasterGeneral drawing attention to the matter.

It suggests that in these districts, or where sulphur abounds, thero is scope for scientific investigation, ana it states that it is not impossible that the kelp deposits on the coasts of New Zealand may, under development, produce both potash and iodine. Few people realise the extra amount of duties cast on the police since the outbreak of the war, and as the numbers of tho force have not been increased, a policeman's life nowadays is somewhat strenuous. Just to instance a few examples the police, in addition to the usual dutios of preserving law and order, have to make full inquiries into the circumstances of all applicants desiring passports, and also into the status of aliens. Further work is ahead for them when the National Reserve Certificate regulations of the Military Service Act afo enforced, and ihe anti-" shouting " legislation also ir.eans extra responsibilities.

The Anzao Club at Featherston, tho building of which is now nearly completed, and which is to be officially opened towards the end of October, will be one of tho finest institutions of its kind in the Dominion. The need for such a place in Featherston was never more aooarent than at present, when there are about 9000 men in camp at Feathorston and Tauhorenikau. . Tho patriotic and generous residents of South Wairarapa, who decided to establish the club, and who provided the money for its erection, are to be congratulated on tho splendid accommodation they havo provided for officers, non-commissioned officers and men. Nothing appears to have been overlooked, and everything in tho building is of the best quality.

Patrons of the municipal tepid baths may be reassured by a statement from D/A. Foster, made at tho Workers' Educational Association meeting on Saturday evening, that tho risks of infection "to users of the bath are very small. Asked if the baths had assisted to spread the recent scarlet fever epidemic. Dr Foster replied that he did not think eo, as tho germs of scarlet fever and many other diseases wore transferred directly from the human bodv. He did nob think the risk of catching infection at the baths was more than the ordinary risk. Possibly, the tuberculosis germ might survive in the water, and the typhoid germ certainly could, but the germs of other diseases were not likely to-. "Personallv," concluded tho speaker.
