LARGE QUANTITY OF PRODUCE

DAMAGED

Inquiries made at Lytteltou on Saturday shewed that the damage done by the lire in tho railway No. 2 shed was more substantial than anticipated at the time of the outbreak. The stock consisted of 2675 bags of chaff, 25 sacks of wheat, 119 sacks of potatoes, 3 sacks linseed and. 60 bales of cornsacks, of an estimated value of £I2OO. The greater Sroportion of tho chaff was damaged y fire and water. Mr W. Cook, of Heathcote, had about 2000 sacks of chaff in store, and, although a largo quantity will bo salvaged, it is estimated' that in the absence of any insurance he will lose about £2OO. The cornsacks belonged to a Wellington firm, and, as many of them are charred,' it is estimated that about £2OO worth of the consignment hals been lost. v .., The members of tho Lytteltou Kailway Wharf Labourers' Union had thenoilskins and working clothes stored in the building, and it is estimated that 100 men havo lost £4 worth of clothes each. As work has been slack, the loss to tho men is heavy. Tho rewiirs to the shed will cosb about £IOOO.
