SPORTING.

NEWS AND /NOTES. A start will be made to-day with the spring meeting of the Australian Jockey Club, which will attract more titan the usual amount of interest throughout meeting owing to the. largo number of New Zealand-owned horses claiming .engagements. Kilboy figures in the Derby, and be will be a centre of attraction, on ' account of liis sale during the week', at a very big price. Bee, who is one of the favourites for the Metropolitan Handicap, may be a starter to-day in the Spring Stakes, a weight for age event, of a mile and a hafl, in which Sasanof is also engaged. Other New Zealand horses'engaged at the meeting include Kooya-, Diavolo. Cheloma, Shrill, Sweet Corn, Gold Painting, Spauglo, Silont Way, Reval, Zuland, • New .York and Okaihau, so that the results will be closely followed in the Dominion.,. . The Ashburton trainer, J.. J. Lewis, was reported to the Geraldine Racing Club stewards for impertinence to the starter on Thursday. Tho incident, which arose out of the start of a race, formed the subject of an inquiry yesterday, when Lewis was cautioned.

At' the Geraldine meeting on Thursday, Multuin in Parvo finished third m the Belfield Welter Handicap, the concluding event of the day. His rider, r. G. /Homes, omitted to weigh in, a neglect which cost him a fine of £2 yesterday.

For heglecting to scratch Antiopa for the Ohapi Hack Handicap on Thursday, T. Sheenan was fined £2 by the stewards of the Geraldine Racing Club. There was . a good deal of bumping and interference .during tho running ot the President’s Handicap, the principal event - at the Geraldine, meeting yesterday. Ah inquiry was held after the race, F. G. Homes, the rider of Multum in Parvo, and 1 A. Tinker, the rider of Glondower, being cautioned. ( Bill' Terry, who .won both the hurdle races at the Geraldine meeting, has raced very consistently this season. At Ashburton his record was a win and a second, so he has won three races and been second once in a fortnight. He. appears to be improving with his racing, as he was a better horse yesterday _than in any of his previous efforts. Commotion’s form in the hurdle race at Geraldine yesterday was a decided improvement on the Showing lie gave on the previous day. The soft going was evidently to his liking, as lie was •always going .strongly, in a bandy position, and he had no difficulty in beating all but the winner. Moidant was responsible for an attractive oerformauce in winning the President's Handicap at Geraldine yesterday. He met with some bad luck in the race, being interfered with going down' the back and again at the home turn, but he ran right away from' his opponents in the straight. This was the first win to his credit, but he is likely to do his owner further service this season. He claims an engagement in the* New Zealand"' Cup, in which- he is weighted at tho minimum. The rain which foil overnight mado the courao very soft, while there were further showers yesterday afterneon, accompanied by a bitterly cold wind.
