: CHRISTCHURCH. > Air T. A- B. Bailey, S M-, presided at ' the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. 1 J. Hanley, on a charge of being found drunk in charge of a horse and tart, was fined 10s. On a charge of drunkenness, John Wilson, a third • offender, was fined 20s. William Baker, charged with vagrancy, in that he had been found by night in an empty house in St Asaph Street, yas convicted and discharged. John Henry Dumblo (Mr Hunt) was remanded for a week, charged with indecent assault on a girl of thirteen at Sydenham. Bail was fixed at £2OO. Charles Edwin Speddiug (Mr Cassidy), a hotel-keeper, was charged with permitting' treating. An adjournment was granted until Friday next. Thomas W. Brown (Mr E. T. Harper) pleaded guilty, under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act. to having sold, gluten meal in a jacket bearing the label that- it contained 40 per cent t>f gluten, whereas it. only contained til.9 per cent. Evi’epce was given l»y it. J. M’Kenzie, in re,'v to the Magistrate’s query as to what gluten was, that gluten was a nutritious element in certain foods. Brown was merely the local manager of a Sydney .firm, which had put up the food. A fine of 20s and costs was imposed, with ana-' lyst’s and solicitor’s fee. • Laura Puschell (Air Alpers) pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to pass another vehicle on , the right side while motoring. AY. G. . Hall, a builder, said that he was cycling in from Styx with ’ his niece, Miss Parker, 1 who was. on. his left side nearest the channel. Near the tram terminus they heard the toot of a horn,.and/moved in to the left, and almost immediately the car came up behind Miss Parker and knocked her off her bicycle, nearly running over her. Evidently the car had attelnpted to pass, between him and the channel. Rose Parker gave similar evidence, adding that all she remembered after the collision was being carried into the tramway shelter at the terminus. She had to be taken home in • a motorcar. Constable Holland said that lie had visited the locality. The centre ot the road was metalled, leaving -t track on either side. H'he defendant gave evidence that .she was driving * her father's car in from Domett. It was only going at five or six miles an hour when the accident occurred. AVlien she first saw Aliss Parker she was riding in the middle of the road in a line with the tramlines, a' couple of chains ahead. She blew- the horn, and Aliss Parker turned to the .right, but--became nervous and ziz-zagged. She therefore pulled up as soon as a collision seemed inevitable. She had not pulled over to’ tho right as she did not think she was likely to,pass the cyclists. Carl" Puschell gave evidence that- Aliss Parker wobbled in front of the car, which was immediately stopped. Laura Helmore and Ann MargaretWood (Mr Helmore) were charged with motoring in Hnglev Park withoutleave. Air Helmore said that motorists were allowed to go as far as tho tea kiosk from Armagh Street, and as far as tho bowling green from Riccarton Road, but there was au area where cars were not allowed. Lucy Beattie, residing 'at Hoi nby, said that, the gardens of her property were kept m-i very good order, and contained * some very valuable blooms, which she had' promised to give for Daffodil Day- She saw a man picking the, blooms, hut ho ran away -and mounted • a motor-cycle. ALiny of her best, blooms were missing. Robert Beattie said that the gardens were well known as those of Air Bassett. wh,o had imported many . valuable plants. The defence was that the gar-, dens looked neglected, and the accused had helped himself. The Alagistrate said lie would not convict, on Erasmussen agreeing to pay £1 to the Red Cross Fund, and witnesses’ expenses., ASHBURTON. Air A r (G. Day. S.AI., presided at the Ashburton Alagistrate’s Court yesterday. , ‘ A boy pleaded guilty to having stolen a bicycle, valued at-£9, the property of Thomas Bennall. After hearing police evidence his Worship adjourned th'e case for three months, or-' doring the boy not to come into town during that period, except to attend drill. A charge against J. G. Jackson of failing to send his child regularly to school was adjourned for one month. An affiliation order was applied for against. George Frederick Lowe (Air Buchanan). Air Kennedy appeared for the complainant. After hearing evidence the case was adjourned for a week to enable the defence to call another witness. Al’Crea were fined 10s each for failing to send their children to school. Thomas Ireland was fined os and casts for driving a vehicle on a road in the Alitclinrn district after sunset with* ill- lights. M.' Al’Lean (Mr Acla.uri) claimed from A. Searlo (Mr Flesher) the sum of £lO6 12s for haulage of timber from Cairfibrae to Highbank.
