RED CROSS APPEAL. A. , BIG EFFORT TO BE MADE TO-DAY. Ah-angements in connection with' “Our Day” Red Cross appeal ,jo bo mado to-day are now complete,* with the exception that fifty more helpers to sell badges are required for special duty from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tho city has been divided into stations and-beats, and some 400 ladies have shown, their sympathy by offering to sell badges in the various spells. The headquarters will be at the Chamber of Commerce, where helpers will assemble at 8 a.m. Badge sellers must first' obtain their permits and number, and ascertain their station or beat. They will then, bo supplied with box and badges. Refreshments for the helpers, provided by the various Red Cross branches, will bo served by another willing band of assistants at the Climber of Commerce all day. There will bo a produce marquee nrd r,./ct stall on- the south side of Godl y Statue. Tho Overseas Club and the Homan Catholic Red Cross branch will each have a stall in front of the Anglican Cathedral, and- the YAV.C.A., will sell chilling- articles in front of Broadway’o. Something new is promised by Mr Peter Trolovc. to be seen at a -stall in front of Barnett and Co.’s. With the increased number of men in tho field and the heavy fighting, the need for funds for Red Cross worn n-iust bo apparent to nil, and it is hoped that to-day eyoryone will realise his or her responsibility, and' in a spirit of gratefulness will give generously. . NOTES. .■„ ; ■ If tho weather is unfavourable, this morning, a committee uioeting will Lo held at -8 o’clock at the Chamber of Commerce rooms, to decide whether ti*o street collection should be postponed. In response to representations made to him by the member for Riccarton, Mr-George Witty, the Hon W. IX S. MacDonald, Minister in Charge ot tho Stato Coal Department, lias promised to give a donation of a ton of State coal to the Red Cross Fund. Chadwick and Campbell, the concertina artists appearing at- the Opera House, will play in tho streets to-day on behalf of the /‘ Our Day ” fund. It the. day is wet they will visit the tea shops in the city. • Mr Bert La Blanc’s Revuo Company, also of the Opera House, will give performances in various parts of the city during the day- ’ • The Overseas Club lias arranged a very attractive stall in front t of the Cathedral, whore a variety of articles ranging from fruit and produce to books will be on sale, and guessing competitions will bo held. During the day a copy of tho London “ Times ’ ! of 1798, containing Lord Nelson’s despatches in connection with, the battle of the Nile will be offered for sale by auction. A Union Jack, presented by the Avoiiside Red Cross branch, will be auctioned at 5 p.m. outside the marquee in Cathedral Square. v The Sydenham Picture Theatre Proprietary has agreed to give one-third of the profits this evening, to tho fluid. Nordcm delivered a lecture at the Institute Hall, last evening, entitled “ A Trip to Now York Citj\ Los Angeles and the San Francisco Exposition.” Owing tho "unfavourable -■■weather there was a rather poor atteudunoe. The Mayor (Mr C. I. Jennings') introduced Mr Nordon,'who described the sights of New York and other cities. Tiro lecture was illustrated by lantern views screened by Mr It. C. Little.
