SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES'. Mr R. H. Skip with, who was making his first appearance as starter for the Geraldine Racing Olub yesterday, had several troublesome fields to deal with. Chudic and Larola, were ordered back to the paddock, after proving particularly unruly. The fractiousuess of these and other competitors delayed some of the starts, but on the whole the despatches were very even, Mr Skipwith getting through his work with great credit. Four New Zealand Cup candidates v, ere racing at the Geraldine meeting yesterday. Three of them took part n the Geraldine Cup, in which Riugform registered a decent performance, winning by a fair margin from Ardeuvhor. The' latter horse was at a disadvantage, as he had not raced for some time, while Riugform was thoroughly seasoned. Ardenvhor will probably be improved by a race or two and under the circumstances his effort was satisfactory. Ayc-liffe was well placed three furlongs from home, but he faded out badly in the straight, and at present he looks a long way short of Cup form. Mcidant, who also claims a Cup engagement, took part in the BclScld Welter Handicap. He only just failed to hold his place in front, after ho had ’been one of the pacemakers all the way, but there was no special merit in the form, the field being of moderate quality. Ringfornvs win in the Geraldine Cup yesterday war. thoroughly earned. He raced very consistently at the Ashburton meeting earlier, in the month, filling second place, behind Fiery Cross, in the priucipal event each day. His success yesterday does not. involve him in a penalty for the New Zealand Cup. There was a nasty accident in the Hurdle Handicap at the Geraldine meeting yesterday. Ono flight, of hurdles at the entrance to the straight was knocked down the first time round, and on reaching it again, when racing for homo, Kingsway blundered and fell. His rider, F. Holmes, jun., appeared to bo badly hurt, and he was carried in on a stretcher. On being examined ho was found to have broken a collarbone, in addition to receiving some severe bru’see.

Bill Terry and Sarto ft a hare raced rerv consistently in their last three efforts over hurdles. Bill Terry Avon on the first day at Ashburton, third place being filled by Sartosta, vrbo just bent Bill Terry on tbe .second day. The pair met again at Geraldine yesterday, when Bill Terry had a. flight advantage over Sartosta at tho finish. Madam Butterfly, who rron tho Ohapi Hack Handicap at the- Geraldine mooting yesterday, is a three-year-okl sister to 'Soldier’s Chorus, Tannhauscr and C'hembini, by Martian—Grand Opera, by Gipsy Grand—lima. So far she has not shown much form and prior to yesterday sho had never been placed in a race.

Deports from Australia state that Mr l *. ];;. Bitdwiil's three-vear-old coltj Determination, by All Black—Stepteldt, is having a spell, rendered necessary by a bad colei. Racing is in ,i flourishing condition in Sydney at peasant , There are more horses in training at Randvick than ever before, and in order to relievo tho congestion on the training tracks, the gates on the course aro being opened a quarter of an hour earlier in the mornings.

The Sydney sportsman, Mr G. S. Yuille, owner of the imported horse, Gadabout, purchased tho two-year-old filly Initiation for 700 guineas after she won a selling race in England recently. Initiation is by Dinneford— Scotch Fiddle, by Galashiels.

Tho death is reported from the Merton Stud, Now South Wales, of the brood mare Amera (Martini Henry— Vain Glory), who was foaled in 1806. She produced Camera, Damcra, Lady Ruonalf, 1 Malteur, Malthusian, Bellara, Orienta, Regardant and Kcnilera. and all her progeny who raced proved successful. ’ Linera and Dame Aero are among the foals of her daughter Da-

mera, while another daughter, Lady Ruonalf, was responsible for Eastcourt, who won the liawkesbury Guineas this month. Amera is a member of one of the Australian families whose origin cannot he traced, with any certainty. AUSTRALIAN RACING. THE ASCOT THOUSAND.
