CITY COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. Tho Christchurch City Council mot last night; present—the Mayor (Mr H. Holland) and Councillors J. M’Combs. M.P., W. H. Cooper, J. Reynolds, A. S. Taylor, E. Peek, J. M’Cullough, W. Millar, G. Scott, H; J. Otley, H. F. Herbert, D. G. Sullivan and J. O. Jameson. USELESS LAND.

Tho Reserves Committee reported that tlie block of land at the comer of Wordsworth Street and Queen Street, Sydenham, was lying useless and entailing considerable annual loss. The committee recommended tho council either to put the land up for sale by auction or take steps to make it reve-nue-producing. Tho report was adopted'. STREET WIDENING. The By-laws Committee reported that there was only one owner in Stanmoro Road between the - widening already carried out and Draper Street. The land required has a frontage of about 87Aft by a depth of about 16jrft, tho area being b. 3 perches, and tbe committee recommended that Mr Johnstone, the owner, should be offered the sum of £1 por foot frontage to Stanmore Road. The report was adopted. Tho By-laws Committee reported that, a number of owners of property on the north side of Office Road, St Albans Ward, had asked that the provisions of Section 117 of tho Public Works Act, 11.HJ8, should not apply to that side of the street. The city surveyor reported that the fire station and other buildings had been built up to the street lino on tho north sido, and the street widened on the south sido from Winchester Street to ltossall Street, and in his opinion all traffic requirements would be motrif any further widening was carried out on the south side in continuance of that which had already been done. The committee recommended that tbe request should bo granted. Tho report was HOARDING FEES. The By-laws Committee reported that the license fees for builders’ hoardings had been reconsidered, and the committee recommended the council to adhere to the by-law provided that the fee should ho imposed within the inner area and in respect of hoardings erected in Victoria Street between Salisbury Street and Bealoy Avenue and Lower High Street between Bairbadoes Street and Fitzgerald Avenue. Councillor Otley said that the fees were the highest in New Zealand, and were largely in excess of the Dunedm fees. He moved to refer the clause back to tho committee. Councillor G. Scott seconded the motion, which was carried. MISCELLANEOUS. The Reserves Committee reported that in reply to a request for the installation of electric fight, the Sydenham Library Committee had been informed that the matter .would be considered in tbe next estimates. A request had also been received for a dressing room afc the Jerrold Street reserve, but tliere was no money available for the purpose this year.
