Tho Arbitration Court has delivered its decisions in several Christchurch disputes.
The painters’ ease was heard before the Conciliation Council, and an agreement was arrived at there on all points except wages, which was referred to the Court, which has fixed the rate for journeymen at Is 4Jd an hour. Overtimo shall be paid'for at the rate of time and a quarter for tho first two hours, time and a half afterwards up to 10 p.m., and double timo between 10 p.m. and the usual timo for beginning work next morning, if worked continuously. Workers required to begin work between 6 a.m. and the usual time for beginning work shall be> paid at the rate of time and a quarter! For work on Sunday, New Year’s Day,' Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, Show Day, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day, double time shall be paid. No worker shall be required to work more than five hours continuously without am interval for a meal. A journeyman or apprentico employed on cctautry work shall be conveyed to and from work at tho employer’s expense, shall be paid for time going and returning, and shall also be paid a further sum of 2s for every day except Sunday while on the country job. Employers shall have tho option of providing board and lodging. In regard to suburban work, if it is more than a mile and a half from the Chief Post Office workers shall bo paid for time reasonably occupied in travelling to and from the work beyond the mile and a half, or they shall bo conveyed to and from the work at tho employer’s expense. Tho New Zealand Refrigerating Company and the Canterbury Frozen Aleat Company are exempt from this clause referring to suburban work.
WOMEN AS GROCERS’ ASSISTANTS The Inspector of Awards applied for an interpretation of the Canterbury Grocers’ Assistants’ award. The award states that tho term “assistant” shall includo shop assistants, storemen, and assistants, part of whose employment is driving. Tho inspector asked if females who make "up groceries from bulk into small packets for delivery over tho counter or to order of customers should be classed as shop assistants and be entitled to tho wages in clause 1 of the award. The Court decided in tho affirmative. AGREEMENTS CONFIRMED.
Agreements arrived at before the Conciliation Council were converted into awards, dealing with tho operative bootmakers, tho plasterers, the conchbuilders, the motor-car, horse-drivers, and livery stablo employees, the electrical workers, and the operative butchers.
