RED CROSS APPEAL. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The Executive Committee of the “Our Day” Rod Cross appeal met yesterday; present—Mr J. A. Fieshci (in the chair), Lieutenant-Colonei Crcsswell, and Messrs A. E. G. Rhodes, G. Rhodes, E. Nordou, 11. Holland, G. E. Rhodes, W. T. Robinson, J. A. Pannett and P. Hallenstein.

The chairman reported that, together with a donation of £SO which be had just received from the Warehouse Association, the funds at present amounted to £3123 4s 4d. He thought the personal canvass would have to go on until October 20. He contended that £IO,OOO should be raised by the Canterbury military district. After Friday he thought the "funds would stand at about £BOOO, so there should be no difficulty in raising tho extra £2OOO. i There ought to bo nearly as much as % was raised in the wholo of the Dominion last year. The arrangement of collectors for the concert in aid of the funds - to bo held on October 16, was left in the hands of Lieutenant-Colonel Crcsswell and the secretary. Lieutenant-Colonel Cresswoll was appointed to the charge of the collectors on Friday. Mr Nordon suggested that each membof or the committee should have some special duty to perform. As there was a great deal of work in connection with the collection boxes, he suggested that two or three more members should ho appointed to help Lieutenant-Colonel Crcsswell. : . •Arrangements were made for the issuing of permits to collectors and for sending out tho various shifts. Tho secrotary stated that Messrs ■ Chadwick and Campbell, concertina artists, had offered their services on Friday, provided they ?ould obtain a car to take them round. The matter was left iu the hands of Messrs G. Rhodes and Pannett. Permission was granted to Mr IN ordon to give a lecture on “California and the San Francisco .Exposition ” at the Institute Hall, Rangiora, this evening the proceeds to bo devoted to tho Tied Cross Fund. , , ' The Hon J. Borthwick' wrote, forwarding a cheque of £2OO for the fund.

The Canterbury Automobile Association asks for the assistance of its members to-morrow in connection with tho “Our Dav” appeal from about 4.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. Those who aro able to assist aro requested to get into touch with tho- secretary, telephone number 3175.

UNEXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS. It is gratifying to note the many instances of unobtrusive generosity displayed by all classes of society during this time of terrible conflict, states the “Red Cross Record.” Not only cm those who can afford it contribute largo sums in aid of tho Red Cross Society and other philanthropic bodies, but the poor and obscure contribute their mite in their own way. Here are a few instances: — • Every month tho secretary of the Red (Cross Society receives an enveiopb by post in which is enclosed a! postal note for os—nothing more—no name or address. The first one received contained a slip marked “For Red Cross purposes,” since then merely the postal ROte. rr. 1 r, In the main room of a Red Cross depot hangs a contribution box.- Every Saturday morning a sum of 7s Gd was anonymously contributed, wrapped in a piece of newspaper. It was some time before the donor was discovered. Who do you suppose was the culprit? The charwoman who cleans the rooms daily,and who, on pay day, contributes half her wages. Two boys aged fourteen and fifteen, decided to help the Red Cross as they were too young to fight- They set up a stall in one of the stieets, and the other day called on the secretary, and modestlv* handed in a bag containing £IG ls'Sd. A man employed as a liftman, decided to assist, as he was a cripple and ineligible for the. front. Hearing that walking sticks were wanted for wounded soldiers, he resolved to get some. Accordingly each lift passenger was asked to supply a walking stick or its equivalent in cash. By this means lie has already sent to the Red Cross depot G9O walking sticks, and vows to get 2000 before the end of the year.
