HOSPITAL SURGEON.
AN APPOINTMENT OPPOSED. At yesterday’s meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board the Appointments Committee recommended the appointment of Dr J. C. Pairman as an honorary surgeon at. the Hospital, his being the only :< application received for the vacancy advertised. $ Mr T. D. Boag opposed the appointment' of Dr Pairman on the ground that the doctor had attended the recent Police Court proceedings hs a witness against tho board. He did not think the board should appoint a man who had worked against it, and he moved that Dr Pairman be -not appointed. Mr H. J. Otley said that Dr Pairman had attended theV Court to give his honest opinion, and that was nobar to his employment so long ns he was proficient in the required duties at the Hospital. Mrs Wilson agreed with Mr Otley, and said that Dr Pairman was not tho hom'd’s surgeon when he attended tho Court.
Mr W. H. Cooper said that he could not understand Mr Boag’s attitude; Mr Boag, in reply, said that he treated the board’s appointments as if they were part of his own business, and no employer would engage a map who went dead against him and put him to a lot of expense.
The motion was declared lost on the voices, but a division was called for, the result being that the motion was lost by seven votes to eleven. On Mr Otley’s motion, Dr Pairman was then appointed.
