I RUSSIAN ADVANCE, ENEMY BEATEN OFF. STUBBORN FIGHTING CONTINUES. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. PETROGRAD. September 8. A communique states:— Despite repeated German attacks, we occupied positions on the left bank of the western Dvina, northward of Dvinsk. After a fierce artillery preparation, the enemy attacked our posi tiou at Yelitsk in the direction of Kovel, but were repelled. Our oifensive on the Gnila Lipa continues. The enemy are stubbornly resisting from the right bank, to which they retired. ADVANCE IN CARPATHIANS. (Received September 10, 0.0 p.m.) PETROGRAD, September 9. A communique says:—We repelled attacks on the river N&raiuvka, in the direction of Hnlicz. Stubborn fighting continues. The Russians in the Carpathians, south of Baranov, carried a series of heights. A number of cannon were thrown into ravines. THE ENEMY’S VERSION. SUCCESSES CLAIMED. AMSTERDAM, September 8. A German comnutniquo says:—Heavy Russian attacks failed on the Zlotu Lipa. South-east of Brzezany and on the Najarqwka. We repulsed the enemy at Schipoth, in the Carpathians. The enemy in the Carpathians threw, strong forces at ctar positions on heights
west of Schipoth and Dorna Watra. We yielded before the pressure northwest of the Rapul. (Received September 10, 5.5 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, September 9. A Gorman communique 6ays;-~ Russian attacks between the Zlota Lipa and the Dniester were futile. (Received September 10, 5.5 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, September 8. An Austrian communique. says:Pighting in. the Carpathians continues with undiminished bitterness. Eastward of italics the enemy’s attacks wero 'without result. DIRECT COMMUNICATION. RUSSIA, SWEDEN AND BRITAIN. COPENHAGEN, September 8. An official message says that a committee is discussing a scheme to establish direct railway and steamship communication between Russia, Sweden and England.
