A Russian communique says:—We repelled attacks on the west bank of, the Stokhod thirty-four miles northeast of Kovel with heavy enemy losses. GERMAN REPORT. AMSTERDAM, August 31. A German communique says:— Thor© were fix tiller y bsut-les west ©< Riga and Dundaberg bridgehead m the Stokhod salient and south-east ot Kovel. ‘Wo repulsed counter-attacks at Kukul. AUSTRIAN STATEMENT. RUSSIAN ARTILLERY ACTIVITY. (Received September 1, 6.10 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, August 31. A Vienua communique says:— The enemy developed increased artillery activity at numerous points on the Russian frontier. NEWS OF THE ENEMY. GERMAN RBQFORCEMENTS. DIVISIONS FROM THE SOMME. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received September 1, 9.5 p.m.) LONDON September 1. Mr B. Warner Allen states that Germany has dispatched to the Russian front nine divisions from France, although the Germans arc greatly outnumbered on the Somme.
