Tho British official report says:— At «Martinpuich, in the operations reported yesterday evening 128 Bavarians surrendered without attempting to return to their own lines. We gassed- the enemy along a broad fropt between Arras and Armentieros successfully. • WITH THE FRENCH. ENEMY ATTACK NEAR MAUREPAS REPULSED. ' Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received September 1, 8.60 p.m.) PARIS. September 1. A communique says:—A grenade attack on our positions -in Maurepaß Wood was easily repulsed. Minor operations enabled us to progress southward of Estrees and south-west of Soyecourt Wood. THE GERMAN SIDE. ADMIT LOSS OF TRENCH. LONDON, August 81. A German communique says:—Near Roclincourt we lost a trench projecting towards the enemy. BRITISH GAIN ADMITTED. Reuter’s Telegrams. (Received September 1, 10.45 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, September 1. _ To-night’s German communique is the first signed by von Ludendorff. It admits that yesterday the Germans lost a salient jutting towards Martinpuicli.
