RED CROSS SOCIAL AT RICCARTON.

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. There was a record attendance at a Reel •Cross social given 1 by the Riccarton Burgesses’ Association at the Town Hall on Thursday night, and the affair was in all ways successful. 1 . 1 Mesdames’Boyle ; Bad Walter Hill, representing the;CentprijEed Cross depot: addressed the " gathering on the urgent neea for ■ eriergetio work 1 in order to provide comforts for our men at the front. Mrs Hill mado a ferven appeal, and gavo some particulars of the achievements of the Red Cross workers of Canterbury. Great things had been done, but still more was required. "No fewer than 193,937 articles had been sent forward from the central depot with the co-operation of some two hundred branches. Those articles, valued at £51,529, included. 13,159 day sliirts, 13,989 singlets, 15,016. suits of pyjamas, quite apart from Glaxo,, extract of meat, j Swiss milk, and all descriptions of comforts. ‘These men who take their guns, and "their lives in their hands, are fighting our fight, -for us womon, and our children. . Won’t you help?” This was the burjthen of the appeal, praying every women to give even half an hour daily so that the wounded and sick men might have everything of the best. The speakers were heartily applauded and were thanked for their attendance. The euchre tournamont prizes were won by Mrs Lane and Mr Brodie, and the prizes for tho lowest- scores by Miss Hook and Mr Staunton. All were returned and auctioned for tho Red Cross funds, an empty sack producing 11s, 3d. Mr Brightling auotioned a number of gifts, netting about £B. The whole of tho refreshments, music for dancing (by Mr Cessing, of Sumner), and tho use'of the hall were given freo of cost. The Burgesses’ Association acknowledges j help from Miss Fountain, and the members of the Riccarton branch of tho Red Cross workers. The net cash result should bo about £2O for tho fund. The following donations wore received:— Potatoes, Messrs Field and Rovds; tea, Boyds Bros, and Kirk, and Ford and Mirams; cushion cover. Mr Sheeto; wine, Messrs Bishop and Co.; ham. Farmers’ Co-onera-tive Association; flour, Mr, Allen (Riccarton Milks); meat, Christchurch Meet Company, Mr Dixon, Mr R. Jones and Mr Hancox: lol'ies, Alilsebrook and Atlas Comnany; cakes, Mr Purse. Broadway’s, Miss Thompson and “Lincoln Road”; tables, A. J. White; milk, Mrs Deans; bread, Campbell Bros.; and butter, Messrs Oakley and Lummis.
