EDUCATION BOARD.

TDIARTJ AND SOUTH WAR'D.

[From Our Correspondents.]

' TIMARU, June 27. The election of representaiives to the new Canterbury / Education Board is arousing a good' deal of interest in the south ward,'which stretches from the Selwyn to the but in the Tiinaru urban area there is little prospect of -a contest for the wo seats, lhe Tiinaru school committees, wihch comprise all the electors of the urban aiea, met last night to discuss the position, and decided that they could not find m the borough of Timaru candidates possessing the necessary leisure and qualifications' for the positions. When tue Education Commission visited _ Tiinaru many witnesses stressed the point tnat the choice of renreseiitatives to act on a board sitting‘in Christchurch would bo severely limited. At last night | -mooting' this matitcir was mentioned again, and >; was stated that certain gentlemen who wore admirably qualified to sit on tho board had been approached, but had confessed that the demand on their time would be far too great. The result is that Timaru has had to go to Pleasant Point for one of its nominees, securing the services of Mr J. Maze, who is a member of the dying South’ Canterbury Board. The other Timaru nominee is Mr C. S. Howard, also a member of the present board, who is well-known in Christchurch, having been for some years headmaster of the Richmond School, and subsequently an inspector. For the south ward the candidates at present announced aroMessrs G W. Armitagc (Temuka), T. Hughes ana T. Slierratt (Geraldine), and \\. h. Collins (Ashburton). Messrs Armitage and Slierratt aro well known members of the South Canterbury Board, and liavo done good service on local bodies in tlioir districts. Mr Arnutage has quite a record on local bodies, and has even aspired to Parliament. Mr Hughes lias done good service on the Geraldine School Committee since his retirement from Christchurch, where he was a school inspector after he resigned the headmastershm of Waltham School. Like Mr Howard he has been a member of tho Canterbury College Board of Governors. It is expected that the contest for the two t seats to ho filled by the south ward will be very close, and Mr Collins’s populariy in the northern part of the district probably will secure his return, but which of the other three is likely to accompany him no one is prepared to say.
