BOROUGH COUNCILS.

SUMNER. The Sumner trough Council met last evening; present —The Major (Mr • ’ Laurenson), and Councillors i. E. Whitfield, M. Laurenson, A. C. Fryer and A. E. b. K Xhe' ! Sumner branch o£ the Royal Life Saving Society wrote, thanking the council for a subsidy, and stated that the appointment of beach inspectors would be dealt with at the next meeting. . , , Tlie Works Committee in its report stated that a letter had been received from the Power Boat Chib, asking the council to protest against the Tramway Board building a causeway at Burns's jetty. Ihe committee recommended that no action should be taken, and was of the opinion that the proposed work wouid not damage the estuary. The committee recommended that a bonus should be paid to the borough engineer on account of extra work in connection with the electric work when it was completed. Ahe report was adopted. , The Finance Committee s report showed that the receipts for April amounted to £229 6s Ud and ihe payments to £162 Gs Id. At April 30, the sum of £°533 11s 4d was owing to temporary loans, and the bank account was £3BB Bs 3d m credit. Acccunis amounting to £722 12si lid were recommended for payment. Superintendent Carter asked the council for assistance in defraying the expenses incurred at the Fire Brigade demonstration to bo held in the borough. The matter was left in tho hands of the town clerk. It was decided to alter tho by-law dealin 0 with the water used for sewerage purposes, and to charge ten shillings per annum for sewerage connections. The Mayor moved that the agreement made with tho Lvttcl lon Harbour Board regarding the purchase of it 3 property in Sumner should be completed. The motion was An offer was received for the purchase of several water meters. The mn'tcr was left in the hands of tho Finance Committee.

KAIAPOI. The Kaiapoi Borough Council met last eve nine; piceent-Tho Major (Mr J. H. Blackwell), and Councillors R. H. Frost, P. R. I.ei head, \V. Dcubleday, S. Rinaldi, HM'lntonh, J. Bryden and L. Evans. A motion of sympathy was passed in silence, to ex-Couucillor Robb, on the death of his wife. Councillor H. C, Revell wrote, resigning his seat ns « protest against the council increasing the rate at this time of financial st-ess, and appealing to ihe council to reconsider its decision. It was decided that the resignation should bo accepted, and that an appreciation of the services rendered bv Councillor Revell as a councillor be recorded. The Railway Department wrote that the pronosed alteration in the running of the early train from Christchurch to Rangiora would not be suitable, and therefore the council's suggestion could net be earned out The matter was referred to tho Railway Committee, to consider whether a deput n t on o'hould interview the General Manager in Wellington. The tender of T. Storer to cart shingle at 4s 4d per yard, was accepted.. It, was agreed to ask the post office authorities to remove tho disabilities. The Finance Committee reported that tho receipts were £3O 17s 2d, the debit balance now being £ll3l 19s td.
