WAR FINANCE.
NEW ZEALAND’S POLICY. FUTURE GENERATIONS WILL NOT , FEEL PROUD. IO TH? EDITOR. Sir,—The thanks of all readers of your newspapers are due to you for the recent articles upon tile subject of financial self-dependence. Future generations of New Zealanders will , not feel proud of the fact that during the greatest crisis in the history of the umpire their country clung to the financial skirts of the Mother Country. The uuoleasant fact must be faced that as m Britain, so in New Zealand, there are too many people making money out of the 'war. We hear much of giving to funds, etc. Compare the amount given with the amount of war profits 'Think of the fact that those reaping profits by the hundred and the thousand are only too often giving by the ten, or even less. Admiral Beatty has declared that Britain is not morally arid spiritually ready for victory. Now, while admitting all the. devotion and courage shown by New Zealand soldiers, the self-sacrifice displayed by parents and friends, the financial and other kinds of help rendered by Red Cross societies, etc., one has the conviction that there are still many people in this Dominion unwilling to pay the price of victory. The Government would he the true friend of such people hv calling upon them to at least lend it some of the money gained through war profits. We felt proud of the fact that New Zealand led - the way in offering military support to the Imperial Government. Australia has beaten us badly in the matter of financial selfdependence.—l am, etc., HOPEFUL. Ashburton. February 23.
