SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. ' A A Press Association telegram from Wanganui states that Lady Penury was scratched for the Cup and 1 Stewards’ Handicap at 55.10 last night. A start will be made to-day with tho autumn meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club. The leading events'should provide some interesting sport. There is a decent held for the. Wanganui Cup, and at present the issue is regarded as very open. Since lus victory at Woodville, Tangihou has come into favour. He was exceptionally well handicapped, for a horse with a 1 ... Zealand Cup to lies credit, and lie Mill only have to be in lus best form to make matters very, interesting loi the top weight division. The presence ot Chortle. Nones and Flying Start should make the Flying Handicap interesting, though Nones appears to have all tlie best, "of the figures, taking her form at Trentham last' month into account. The Jackson Stakes will be decided on Saturday, and it may provide a good contest. Mr G. I>. Greenwood holds a particularly strong hand, with Emperad'or. Bimeter and Nones, so that no seems to have an excellent chance ot adding to his already fine record m this event.

The Wnimato. Racing Club, has received a fine list ot nominations toi its annual fixture, which will be held next month. It is not only the numbers that are satisfactory, tlio quality being easily the best that has been attracted in recent 'years, and the meeting looks like proving a record' success. Rlccarton stables are well represented, and there should be a strong contingent of horses from this end. The drawback in connection with the Wairoate meeting is that visitors from Christchurch are unable to reach home until the following day. If the club would only arrange for a special train, to return on the day of the races, it could relv on a big crowd of visitors from Christchurch and neighbouring districts.

Several Canterbury trainers, with their horses, left for the, north on Tuesday night, in order to assist at the Wanganui Trotting Club's meeting, which will be held on Friday and Monday. . Obsono figures among the nominations for the Wnimate meeting. He lias only re centlv gone into his old quarters in R. M'Kay’s stable at Oaniaru, after a stud season in Central Otago- Obsono is now iu his tenth year, so that he has retained his form in a wonderful manner, but he must be getting very near the end of his racing career non'.

The nominations for the Trial Plato at Wnimate include Partisan. Kilkee, Subterfuge and Aycliffc, four Rice a r ton two-year-okls, who have shown a fair amount, of promise in their track work. Hap Dll a, who has been on the easy list lately, has resumed work at Riccarton, and will be got ready for late autumn engagements. The son of Obligado figures among the nominations for the Waimate meeting.

Kilts gave a decent showing over four hurdles at Riccarton yesterday, and he will probably bo given a chance to earn distinction as a jumper later in the season.

The unnamed Sir Lnddo gelding, in F. Christmas's stable, is to be given a trial among the jumping brigade. Yesterday, with Kilmeny as a schoolmaster, he was sent twice over the two pony hurdles and shaped well for a beginner.

Margarita continues to perform with great credit on Sydney pony courses. At Ascot, on February 16, the daughter of Achilles—Margaret, carried lOst 81b, and won the Fourteen-two Handicap, covering seven furlongs in lmin 30sec, which is a record for the course. The rejection by the Victoria. Racing Club of the entry of Svdian for his autumn engagements was very unpalatable to many backers of liorses, and is certain to give the committee of that club another betting problem to determine. Since the, celebrated Audacity case, the Victorian Club is no longer the arbiter in Victoria for the settlement of betting disputes, authority in that respect having passed to the committee of the Victoria Racing Club. Sydian was one of the earlier fancies for the Newmarket Handicap, and at. the time of tho rejection of his entry lie was at a comparatively short price in the quotations. Members of the ring reported that Sydian had 'been well supported for the race in question, and his backers are naturally anxious to know whether they have lost their money or the case is to be regarded as being on all fours with that in which Audacity figured so conspicuously. The decision of the Victoria Racing Club on the point is, therefore, ’being anxiously awaited. The entry of Sydian is not the first that has been rejected by race dubs in Australia. Some years ago racing authorities found themselves iu a. difficulty when it was proposed to deal with certain horses after they had been entered, and the rules were amended to include one to the effect that the committee or stewards may decline to receive nominations or entries, and may, after receiving, reject them at any time without, giving any reason for so doing. Sydian was among the entrants for the Oakleigb,

Plate, Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup in the name- of F. H. Lewis, in England last year he started on five occasions, and won once—Newmarket Biennial Stakes, one mile.
