MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

CHRISTCHURCH. MrH. Vi.'. .Bishop, S.M., presided yesterday at the Magistrate’s Court. John M’Sweenev, a fourth offender, was fined -Os, in default seven days’ imprisonment, on a charge of drunkenness. William Vincdtit, a fourth offendor, was sentenced to fourteen* days’ imprisonment with hard' labour, on a charge of drunkenness, his record of convictions for inebriety being a lengthy one. . James Alfred Smith, charged with drunkenness and with using obscene language, was fined 5s on the first charge, and 40s on the second, the alternatives being twenty-four hours’ imprisonment and one month’s iropris--0 inn on t respocti rely. Christopher Inkster (Mr Mosley) was charged with entering licensed premises while prohibited, and with procuring liquor wlrile prohibited on two occasion. Accused was fined 10s on one charge, and ordered to pay costs on the other two charges. Thornton Newsome (Mr Malley) was charged with procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order against him. The Magistrate said' this was the twenty-sixth breach, and accused had twice been committed to Roto Roa. Accused was convicted and ordered to come- up for sentence when called upon and was warned that on his next appearancei he would be sent to lloto Roa for two years.

The Magistrate granted an adjournment- for five weeks, to -give defendant an opportunity to pay. Matilda. Adelaide Victoria Eld red applied for an order requiring her husband, Arthur Ernest Eldred, to contribute to her support and that of their child. Defendant appeared in uniform, and stated he was on sick leave from Trentham. He was a member of-.the Eleventh Reinforcements. Miss Cardale said that defendant refused, to recognise his wife and would not live with her. The Magistrate refused defendant’s application for an adjournment, and made an order for the payment of 21s a week. Defend-, ant said he wanted to allot- 15s a week to bis mother and 15s a week to his wife. The Magistrate said that the ■wife and child had first claim, and he could not alter his decision. LYTTELTON. Captain R. Hatchwell, J.P.. and Mr C. Eerrier, J.P., presided at the Magistrate’s Court at Lyttelton yesterday. William P. Loader pleaded guilty to a change of stealing 111 b of sugar, Tallied at 2s 6d, the property of the Union Steam Ship Co. The evidence showed that the accused, who was employed . in the stokehole, had attempted to get the sugar ashore shortly after the vessel’s arrival, the goods being wrapped up in some washing. Accused was fined £2 and costs. R ANGKOR A. Mr E. R. Good. J.P., and Mr W. G, Whiteside. J.P.. were on the Bench at the Rangiora Court yesterday. Judgment by default was given in the case of 'E. Gray (Mr Johnston) v. Harry . Miles, claim £4 Is with costs.
