A Press Association telegram states that Sir Joseph Ward arrived at Rotorua last night on a short Visit.. Sir Fra.ncis Bell,.leader of the Legislative Council, was a passenger by the Maori from the north yesterday. A Dunedin Press Association telegram states.that Captain W. J. Hardham, V.C., who left the Rotorua at Hobart to undergo an operation, reached Dunedin yesterday by.the Paloona, and will proceed -north to-day, reaching' Wellington on Friday. It is reported in Auckland Masonic circles that Mr .. Oliver Nicholson, is the chosen, candidate for the office of Grand Master, of New Zealand, and will be installed at the annual communication of Grand Lodge to be held at the Auckland Town Hall on May 10. Mr S. I. Ffitch, of Dallington,left Christchurch last night to attend a conference of fruitgrowers in Wellington. The conference will recommend to tire Government, varieties of apples best adapted for growing in the different provinces of the Dominion. Mr Ffitch was appointed '.a delegate by the Canterbury Fruitgrowers' Association. The Dunedin correspondent- of the "Lyttelton Times" telegraphs that a private cablegram advises. that Mr W. A. Curzon-Siggers, son ot Canon Curzon-Siggers, has heen awarded, by Cambridge University, the Mahon law scholarships, tenable for four years. This is the first time this scholarship .has been awarded to a New Zealander. Mr C M. Parker,, who has been secretary of the Canterbury Society of Arts for the past four years, has resigned on account: of continued illhealth. At a meeting of the' council held yesterday, Mr Parker's resignation was accepted with much regret, and the president (Mr W. Menzies Gibb) was requested to write expressing reg.-et at the circumstance . which made the resignation necessary. Mr G. L. Donaldson was unanimously appointed to fill the position. Among the visitors to the district at present (says the." Hokitika Guardian") is Mr A., Sugden,. of Christchurch, who left Hokifika about thirtyfive years ago to follow the printing trade in the Cathedral City, . Since then'Mr Sugden has been on the staff of the" Lyttelton Times," from which he has just retired. "Old. Boys" will, remember Mr Sugden as a very genial spirit who was the life and soul of- the amateur minstrel troupe which existed here many years aa;o. After visiting Ross and Kumara Mr Sugden will move north again. Chanlam-Captai'n J. R. Sullivan will attend the fourth annual conference of the New Zealand Methodist Church which will be opened in Auckland tomorrow evening. At the outbreak of war Mr -Sullivan was attached to a Timaru church,. Failing to secure an appointment as chaplain, he enlisted as a private. He saw.a great deal of servicp on Gallipoli. and had a miraculous escape from death- He was shot through the mouth, and .the bullet, wont don-n his thr.oat and came out of his shouid'er Me was invalided home to New Zealand, and has recently received an appointment as chaplain.
